What browser are you using? On IE 5.0 and 6.0, open the "Tools->Internet Options" dialog. Select the "Security" tab, select the "Internet" content zone, then choose "Custom Level...". In the resulting "Security Settings" dialog, choose "disable" or "prompt" for the ActiveX controls and plug-ins. Warning - don't change any of the already disabled settings to "prompt" or "enable" (e.g. "Download unsigned ActiveX controls" and "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe"). Hit "OK" to return to the "Internet Options" dialog, and then switch to the "Advanced" tab. Uncheck the boxes for "Play animations in web pages", "Play sounds in web pages", and "Play videos in web pages".
Disabling ActiveX isn't for everyone. Doing so will cause some webpages that rely on ActiveX controls to malfunction, and unfortunately will often result in IE itself popping up warning windows saying things such as "ActiveX control disabled - page may not display correctly" or, if you chose "prompt" in the settings, "Do you want to allow ActiveX control to run?" Microsoft... grrrrr!!!

However, turning off the web sounds and animations doesn't have any unintended consequences.
A better solution may be one of the general web filter programs such as:

Just make sure to support our favorite site by allowing banner ads on CDRLabs to display (although you can still turn off the sound and animation)
