Memorex 52/24/52 CD-RW Quickie Preview

Here's a little preview to give you an idea of what to expect from Memorex's new 52x writer.

Here's a picture of the front. It's obviously a Lite-On if you couldn't tell.



How about a Nero screenshot? Yep, 6WS2 firmware. Only a 2048KB buffer too.



InfoTool. And yes, the drive supports Mt. Rainier.



How about some CD Speed graphs? First the drive writing using some Verbatim 48x media:



Check out those RPM's. The thing starts writing at 23x and spins at about 11,000 RPM. Not quite a 40x average writing speed though.

How about rewriting? It uses CAV like the TDK veloCD 48x.



And then reading. The seek times are similar to the other Lite-On based drives. The CPU usage is also a little on the high side like Lite-On's 48x writers.



Thats it for now. I'll be doing more tests later. If there's something you'd like to know (other than whether or not the drive can copy games), let me know.

Oh yeah, the drive was able to write 650MB in about 2:25. The fastest 48x writer we've tested (TDK veloCD 48x) took about 2:36. So you're seeing a performance increase of about 11 seconds.

I was successfully able to take my Memorex 48x24x48 -> 52x24x52.

I had flashed my rom to a Lite-On LTR-48246S ... now it's based on your 52x firmware.

I don't have 24 speed CDRW, but I got readings nearly identical to yours (including the high cpu use). I was able to burn a 52x disc in about 14 seconds faster than the 48x (no big deal, but it's cool!)

Someone please try this with an LTR-48126S too! I really want a 52X drive, and the 48/12/48 LiteOn is the only 6S chipset drive I see listed locally.

How is the write quality at 52x speeds..are there damaged sectors with Nero CD Speed scandisc???

Eliminator, some ppl have reported success making the conversion from the Lite-On 48246S to the Memorex 52X/24X/52X on this page:

It seems Lite-on is still holding onto their official firmware. I'm tempted to flash my Lite-on-flashed TDK to a Memorex drive for fun.

I am going to be buying a new burner soon. I was thinking should I wait for the Lite-ON 52x or the 48x is good enough. (good thing liteon's come fast to canada) I have read rumours on the net that 52x burners will create more errors than 48x.
by the way you said this was using cav writing. well does it use p-cav till 40x? and then 48x and 52x at cav or the whole thing is using cav?

Lite-On 52x firmware has been extracted from a drive and is available here:

That's Alexnoe's web page, he's a mod over at CD Freaks.

They had a user created contest to see who could extract the firmware 1st. They truely are crazy. But it's been tested here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php ... adid=56128 and it seems to work.

Elim, you said the drive is using cav for all speeds. P-CAV is better than CAV isnt it? Then why did they get rid of it on speeds like 40x?
Liteon's 48x drive uses 48x (CAV) 40x, 32x, 24x (P-CAV)
16x, 12x, 8x, 4x (CLV). and the difference between the 52x is only of 4x (a couple of seconds faster).
P-CAV being better, when i go out to buy a burner soon, why should I go for the 52x?
Another dumb question (sorry) : What in the world is Half-Height Internal Design which this new LiteON 52x is supposed to have??
