Questions DVDs

Postby gamemaniaco1987 on Wed Jan 29, 2025 7:21 pm

M-Disc DVD is good for long term archiving or just marketing? Is it the same as regular DVDs?

Is there any problem if I store 6 DVDboxes with discs inside in a horizontal position, each box on top of the next box horizontally inside a closed shoe box?

Does MDisc DVD or common DVD have any resistance to damage and fissure when pressing the center of the disc to fit in the center of the dvdbox?

If you believe the marketing, then yes, it is good for long term archiving. In reality though, no one has really done any studies to see how well they compare to good quality media in the long term.

Optical discs are designed to be stacked horizontally. The center sections are slightly thicker so that they can sit on a spindle or whatever, without there being a little bit of space between the outer section where the data is stored.

I store 6 DVD discs stacked horizontally like the photo in the long term, inside the DVD box, does this pose any risk to the media?

I also have this DVD box for two discs. Is there any problem in storing two discs in this box?

Those boxes are probably the best way you can store media. They not only protect the discs, they keep them away from sunlight, etc. And, as long as you're not stacking a hundred of them, I don't think there's any risk of them getting crushed. I don't really see any issues with the ones with two discs either.

Here where I live I have no way of controlling the temperature, it varies between 34-36C and humidity between 57-67%, but I keep the DVD M-discs in these boxes. Will the longevity of these discs be short due to the humidity and temperature?

It will definitely be shorter than if you were able to store them at cooler temps with lower humidity. How much shorter? I really can't say. I did some Googling and did find this if it makes you feel any better:

https://www.verbatim.jp/download/produc ... ake_vF.pdf

"The discs were stressed in a combined temperature, humidity, and light cycle (Section 1.2.2, p.3). The discs
were subject to the following test conditions in the environmental chamber: 85°C, 85% relative humidity
(conditions specified in ECMA-379) and full spectrum light (per MIL Std. 810G) (Figure 1-1, p.3). The test
was repeated three times with identical results."

and

“None of the M-DISC™ DVD media suffered any data degradation at all. Every other brand tested showed
large increases in data errors after the stress period. Many of the discs were so damaged that they could
not be recognized as DVDs by the disc analyzer”

If what they claim is not marketing, the MDisc DVDs would last 1000 years at 25C 50%RH, but for the conditions I mentioned, what would be the approximate expectation?

I honestly have no idea but, if its not just marketing, they'll probably still be around long after we're gone.
