Anybody actually using M-DISC ?

Postby stix on Mon Dec 14, 2015 7:11 pm

Is anybody actually using M-DISC ?? If so, why? And where are you getting the media at a reasonable cost?

The disks are prohibitively expensive. Anything being stored on media other than M-DISC should last long enough as it is, or at least until standard media is near obsolete. It seems like a good bet that when standard media is no longer readable we will probably not be using current storage methods very much anyway. Most people have already moved on from optical storage.

So why put the money into M-DISC media when cost is so extreme and standard media is relatively inexpensive, especially if you take good care of your disks? It doesn't make any sense.

Thoughts, anyone?

I've used them to archive stuff like family photos, but that's about it. It's a lot easier to just just throw them up on OneDrive or whatever now and forget about it.

That being said, there are still places where they're required to keep certain data for long periods of time. Flash based storage is a definite no go. Data on hard drives and tape can be damaged or destroyed by magnetism. The only thing your left with is optical media and if you're really serious about your backups, you're gonna shell out the money for good quality media.

Are M-DISC's better than so called archival grade media? I really don't know. If Millenniata really wanted the format to take off, they'd lower their prices. Otherwise, the M-DISC is going to go the way of the DVD-R DL and 100GB BD-R.

Ian, thank you for your thoughts.

I probably will try out some M-DISC media eventually, but for now it is just way too expensive when there are other options that I'm perfectly happy with.
