PlexDisc Ripping Off Plextor Name And Logo?

Postby Ian on Thu Nov 12, 2015 9:09 pm

I haven't gone shopping for media in awhile so I was a bit surprised to see Newegg selling Blu-ray media from a company called "PlexDisc". Has anyone else noticed that their name, logo and even the color of the packaging has more than a passing resemblance to Plextor?

Here's the logo. Aside from the obvious "Plex" in the name, the X looks a lot like the one in Plextor's old UltraPlex and PlexWriter logos.

And then you have the packaging. Looks like a Plextor product to me.

Appears to be another Vinpower brand. PlexDisc has the same address and phone number as Optical Quantum.

Yep, Vinpower is behind these discs. Apparently they're made by Optodisc.

With the news that Taiyo Yuden will stop the production of all lines of Taiyo Yuden and JVC branded media after summer, where can one find a suitable alternative? Fortunately, Vinpower developed the Plexdisc line, which is manufactured by Optodisc, to follow the strict quality standards that Taiyo Yuden pioneered when they developed the first recordable CD-R many years ago. The Taiyo Yuden (TY) and JVC brands have been the standard bearers for recordable CD-R and DVD±R for many years.

Yes, have noticed the close resemblance for awhile now. Seems to be a blatant ripoff of a logo/trademark.
I don't understand how they can get away with it.

Even more interesting is the news of TY closing media production. Very disappointing.

I wonder if it is somewhat legit as Vinpower is the main distributor of Plextor's few remaining optical drives.
