Intel to exit motherboard market

Postby stix on Wed Feb 06, 2013 9:40 pm

Intel is planning to wind down it's motherboard business over the next three years; they will stop motherboard development after Haswell chips ship, but continue to make motherboard components.

Have you heard about NUC? (Next Unit of Computing)

If I was a motherboard manufacturer, I'd be very concerned with this news. Same goes for system builders. It's going to suck if you have to buy a motherboard and CPU together just because the chip is soldered on the board.

Those NUC kits are pretty cool.

There were rumors back in November that Intel was going to do it with their Broadwell CPUs.

I would not be surprised if there was some truth to it. VIA and AMD already do it with some of their CPUs and with the desktop market shrinking, there's less need to upgrade.

Interesting. Thanks for the heads up. May have to build a Haswell rig.

Less need to Upgrade? I thought there was always a need as long as there are faster, more powerful CPUs being built.

I meant replacing the CPU for a faster one. With more and more people buying laptops and tablets instead of desktops, they just toss out the old one and buy new instead of upgrading the components.

I think it's hard for them to keep up with sales with the big boys of asus, gigabyte, msi etc...

Their motherboards are fine but they just don't have the flash of the enthusiasts boards
