Please help me choose

Postby acquisition on Tue Feb 07, 2012 2:58 pm

My old BENQ 1640 finally died yesterday so I went in my closet and pulled out two old (but never used) CD-ROM drives I bought but never got around to integrating. One is an ASUS DRW-2014LIT and the other is an LG GH20NS15.

I want to use the drive that can read music CD's the best - fastest and most accurately - using EAC 1.x.

Which of two drives is the better choice for my needs?

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the LG GH20NS15, but the ASUS DRW-2014LIT was an absolutely horrible drive. Give it to someone you don't like.

Well, then... ;-)

Any suggestions for a current model SATA drive? All I need it for is ripping CDs with Exact Audio Copy (EAC).

Curiously, I enjoyed using the ASUS this evening and it ripped two CDs great.

This may be due to the "just good enough" principal?

Sorry about that. The DRW-2014LIT just brings back painful memories.

Seriously, if you're just going to use it to rip audio CDs, it will do fine.

One thing you need to realize is that about half of those are made by Lite-On. HP, Plextor, ASUS.. almost all of them are Lite-On rebadges. More often than not, you can just buy an actual Lite-On for less and get the same performance. LG and Optiarc drives have always been good. DAE speeds are usually a little bit less (40x) on them though.
