Taiyo Yuden CDRs

My supply of Taiyo Yuden CDRs is running out and I'm thinking of buying more, but being that TY has a plant i Fukushima, I'm not so sure I want to buy CDRs that might come from there because of the radiation levels that have been reported.

What would be a good alternative to Tayio Yuden?

I can't imagine that they'd ship discs that had a dangerous level of radiation. I guess if they're glowing, you should send them back.

I used to use a lot of Verbatim CD-R's but the quality of their consumer grade media has gone down a lot over the last few years. Maybe try their white inkjet printable discs? It looks like they're still DataLifePlus with AZO.

Their silver ones don't appear to be DataLifePlus though and are made in Mexico of all places.

I've always liked to use Taiyo Yuden, and I may still buy their CDRs. It's just that last week I was watching a report that mentioned that radiation levels still aren't right in Fukushima and I was a little concerned about it.

I'm guessing most stores have a decent stock of discs. It may be a few more months before the radiated discs make it into circulation in the US.

I had been thinking of buying some right before the accident happened. I should have bought some a while ago. You maybe right, though, older stock may still be available.

What is archival grade media?

After doing some thinking about it, I decided to buy these JVCs at buy.com:

Would you know if the JVC branded TY's are as good as the TY branded ones?

I did think about getting Verbatim datalifeplus and even their archival grade CDRs, but not this time. Maybe the next time.

TY owns most of JVC's media business. For whatever reason, they stopped selling media under their own brand and decided to sell them under JVC. To make a long story short, the discs are the same.

I wouldn't bother with the archival grade stuff. These discs typically use a gold reflective layer and special dyes that, under certain conditions, give them a storage life of like 100 years. It's not really worth the money for everyday stuff or even relatively short term backups.

100 years by what standards? I would not count on that...

If you seal them in plastic, wrap them in bubble wrap and bury them 20' deep in your back yard, they might last 100 years. Seriously though.. how do they know they'd actually last that long? I have brand new discs that are already unusable after 5 years.
