Seagate To Unveil Momentus XT Hybrid Hard Drive On May 26th?

Postby Ian on Tue May 18, 2010 8:48 am

Seagate announced via Twitter yesterday that it would be unveiling a new device on May 26th that could boost a system's performance by 150%. The Greek website HWBOX.gr is reporting that this device may be a hybrid hard drive with 4GB of solid state memory.

Translated:

A particularly interesting news came a few days ago in HWBOX.gr , but unfortunately we can not confirm yet if it is true or not. The famous maker of hard drives Seagate , will release the Momentus hybrid drives XT . What exactly represents the word hybrid; Imagine a hard disk drive (HDD) and a 4GB Solid-State Drive (SSD) memory to SLC on a drive! Coming in capacities of 250GB, 320GB and 500GB drives the new hybrid has speed 7200 rpm minutes, 32MB cache , 4GB Solid State Memory and SATA 3.0 Gbps interface. Additionally use technology NCQ (Native Command queing), which dramatically increases performance by allowing the housekeeping commands read and write.

Enjoy the unlimited capacity of HDDs and the speed of SSDs in a single disk! The initial results are 80% faster than traditional 7200RPM HDDs in PCMark Vantage, quiet and very cold. Expected to be used in high-end laptops, workstations and small form factor PCs, while supporting standards and USB 3.0 and eSATA.

I think Hybrid-drives are not interesting for most ppl. If I want a very fast, I get a SSD, if I need much space, I buy a HDD

Yeah, but the cost of an SSD is still too high for most people. A hybrid drive that offers the best of both worlds would be attractive to many.

That being said, I have one of the original hybrid drives in my old laptop. It was an epic fail right from the start. I had to turn off the hybrid junk so that I could use my laptop without it blue screening.

One of the probs was that the hybrid-drives had only some GB (or MB) SSD, to less for really showing advantage, at least for the price.

So the manufacturers don´t really sold much, so the most (I thought all) gave it up long time ago

These drives support something called Adaptive Memory Technology. The only thing I can find on it is a trademark.

Here's the official announcement. The press release doesnt' say it, but the drives will retail for $156 (500GB), $132 (320GB), and 250GB ($113).

There have also been a few early reviews.

I dunno know about you guys, but those reviews aren't showing the huge performance gains that Seagate was advertising.

It´s far away from that.

I miss in all reviews actual HDD-drives, like WDs newest Black/Blue-Caviar with 500GB per Platter, or Hitachis 7K1000.C

I think I stay with my good old non-Hybrid-HDDs :)

This is probably the best review I've seen. Instead of rushing out a review and going "omg.. itz a hybrid... editorz choice" they took the time to test it right.

Well, maybe when prize is the same like a standard-HDD, I think about it.

The prices also indicate that they are not a serious upgrade as was thought beforehand based on the hype. I had originally planned on purchasing one to store all of my back up on my home business computer, so that I could run business continuity planning software on my main drive. I was originally hoping to solidify my system to run my small business out of my home, but once I noticed some of the deficiencies on the external drive I backed off of my plan. As far as the other software, what does anybody know what is best for dvd burning? Has anybody tried a something that would be good for replication?
