Which one of these?

Postby micke1m on Wed Nov 04, 2009 10:21 am

Which one of these two should i get?
Samsung SH-S223B or Sony Optiarc AD-7240S
DAE quality is most important to me, but if they're pretty much the same in quality DAE speed is also nice

They're pretty close as far as DAE quality and speeds go. If I had to pick one, I'd go with the Optiarc.

I've got the Optiarc AD-7240S... I still use CD-R's (I'm a dying breed, I know), but it has trouble reading what it writes. Typical of every NEC chipset based drive I owned (with the exception of the Pioneer DVR-212).

Just make sure you don't let the 7240 get over heated by burning a lot of disks while the machine is hot like on a summer day without air conditioning.
Mine got too hot when it was about 90 in here and hasn't burned a good disk since, before that it was one of my best dvd burners I'd owned in a long time. :(

I got the 7240S now and ripping music with EAC works great, and playing music CDs with foobar2000 also works, but windows seems to have problems with it. If I insert a CD the dvd writer icon in windows notices that there is a "CD-ROM" in it, but if I try to open it it just ejects and says insert disc. It's the same for all kinds of discs, music CDs, data CDs, DVDs. Could it be some issue with Windows 7 RC I'm using?

Edit: It has the latest firmware 1.03.

Edit 2: Seems it works sometimes after a reboot. So some boots it just won't work and other times it does.

Is it a cd-r you burned with the Optiarc? It's typical of NEC ... it does not read what it writes very well on CD-R... If I burn a CD with another drive, the Optiarc will read it fine.

I'd try the drive in another computer. If you see the same problems it might be lemon. If there was a problem though, its odd that it will rip audio CD's. You'd think it wouldn't read any discs at all.

They're "real" pressed music CDs (as well as pressed DVD movies and games).
I've noticed my laptop has the same problem (Windows 7 RC there as well), and of course it has a different drive. It's only Windows itself that has issues, when trying to open the disc in explorer. Other programs using it works fine.
Also the problem hasn't appeared for a couple of days now, but then I haven't really rebooted much.
