LG GH22LP20 + LG GH22LS30 Problems

Hi everybody, I want to ask for your help please as I'm having REAL problems with there two drives.

Everything seems to be fine except the copying/ripping of the DVDs I get out of my DVD recorder I use for recording TV/Sky.

I have a Sony RDR-GX120 recorder which I use to record and edit mostly Motorbike races. When wanting to back them up to DVD-R after recording them I put them into the PC and before getting these two new drives just did a straight disc to disc copy using AShampoo Burning Studio 6 FREE.

That did an exact copy to DVD-R or DVD+RW and was fine.

Now almost every time I try the disc will copy, and the file structure is there, but all the files have 0 file size?

So far I've tried disc to disc copy and ripping the disc to HDD then write it. I've tried writing to DVD-R (Tevion and Verbatim), and two differnt makes of DVD+RW (Mr. DVD and Verbatim).

I've also tried AShampoo, Nero 7 Essentials that came with the drives and CDBurnerXP.

I have XP Pro running Service Pack 2,
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600,
4 gb RAM.

Any help will be great.

Are you copying on the fly, from one drive to another?

Yes that is why I am having all the problems, I have been able to get around some of the problems with either making a disc image first, letting the program cache copy or just copying the Video directory over and then re-authoring the DVD through something live Nero, but really that is not the point is it? Why pay good money for two new Re-Writer drives and them not being able to do what you what then to do most?

I have tested everything else I can think off to do like write CDs/DVDs, ripping converting and everything else seems fine. It's just this one aspect of the drives that is at fault.

I'm not sure about non-CSS protected DVD videos, like the ones from your DVD recorder, but those LG's rip commercial discs at only 6x. You may want to run a transfer rate test with CD Speed and see what speeds your reader is capable of and then adjust the writer to match.

With the DVD+RW discs it's as slow as 2.4x and can't go any slower, so that is just not an option?

Since my last post I've tried the drives out on everything else I can think of and it all works fine, if somewhat noisy at times. So it's just down to this copying on the fly of DVD+RW discs from my recorder!

I must say that even though these drives have recieved some good reviews I personally think they are total, well I can't say, lets say crud?

While trying to sort some things out I put in an OLD DVD-ROM drive (2003) I have knocking about the place a lovely Plextor and the overall performance and especally build quality is FAR better on the old Plex than the LGs. I must have ran the Plex for about 5 years and it STILL works faultlessly every time. The LGs have already TWICE read the disc like there was a bag of spanners in the drive.

Anyway thanx for your thoughts so far, anything else you can think of. For a start is there another make of drive to replace these LGs as I don't think I can put up with them for much longer? The two I replaced were Pioneer 115 and a 116, these lasted just over a year!

I'm not too worried about speed, anything about 8x would be a plus, but it has to be very well built and a bit of a work horse, OH! and BLACK!

It's going to be hard to find one to match the quality of an old school Plextor. Most drive companies are trying to cut costs so they use cheaper materials. As a result, they don't last very long.

Optiarc and Pioneer still make some decent drives. Then again, I've been pretty happy with LG as well, so they might not live up to your expectations either.

Very true, I've not really seen a drive in the last couple of years that I would personally call robust!

If all you really want to do is rip on the fly from one drive to the other you might want to try one of the newer Samsung drives with the riplock removed firmwares available at CD freaks and others maybe. They will rip most regular DVD's at 18x and DL at 16x I think, not sure how fast they are at rewritables but probably faster then your getting now.
You could pair it up with one or both of the LG's you have now and be able to do on the fly a lot faster.
If it's mission critical I let it make a image first, just way safer method but it is nice on normal stuff to save time and just rip/burn as fast as possible in one step.
I remember doing the same thing back when CD writers were SCSI and pretty new. I ended up finally with a Yamaha 4260 and a Plextor 32x reader as it was the fastest cd rom
drive out there for DAE and could rip at 32x speed, way faster then the Yamaha could burn. I later got a 40 wide then a LiteOn 163 DVD rom reader as it was even faster and IDE for cheap. I think all of those are still here somewhere and work.
IDE finally got cheap and fast enough that all the SCSI based drives went away, now we're doing SATA

The verify fails? Does the game still play though? I'm not familiar with the DRM on Wii games so I'm not sure if this is normal or not.

No the game reflects as not being able to be read by wii.
Problem is my kids think that dvd's and cd's make good frisbees too, so i somehow need to get this sorted

I'd try other discs. Going by the MID (ISSM R02), those discs are Great Quality brand... which are anything but great quality.
