does Lightscribe in any way effect the longevity of media?

Postby kenwylie@msn.com on Fri Jul 03, 2009 2:36 pm

I am planning to us Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's in the future to backup important files. If I label them using the Lightscribe technology or other thermal lacquer technology, will that in any way decrease the longevity/reliability of the disc? Thanks for the advice!

I don't think TY makes LightScribe media. Most of the LightScribe media out there is made by CMC, MBI and (I think) Prodisc... which really aren't known for longevity.

I'm not sure about thernal lacquer though. Anyone else know?

That is helpful. It looks like my drive uses Labelflash, but that the only manufactures of the disk are Fuji and Memorex...so I am going to skip it. Thanks!

If the files are important, I would consider saving to a hard drive and /or a flash drive.

If it truly is a label flash drive it writes the images to the unburned portion of the disk on the media side. I have had a few drives crossflashed to do label flash and it was fun to take crappy media and burn the whole disk with pictures but that's about all I ever did with it.
It works best if the data side is darker.
