I think I'm one of the few people who actually like Vista but at this point, you might want to wait for Windows 7.

No, I'm talking about the next version of Windows that will replace Vista.

If you believe what Apple fanboys and MS haters say, then Vista is a huge, steaming pile of crap. These people either have computers from 1999 or haven't used it for any amount of time.

I think a fresh install of Windows will help.. may that be XP or Vista.

Windows Vista is "ehhh"... broke down and started running it a couple of months back. It is visually more appealing than Window XP if you have the right hardware. And while I am not sold 100% on Vista, I will not go back to XP... The reason.... I have the RC of Windows 7 and I like it much more than Vista and XP. This will probably be the first release day OS I purchased since Windows 2000.

I would suggest Ubuntu Linux for your older computer, but, no offense Lenny, you seem a little green around computers; Linux is probably not for you... but you may want to download a live CD and boot from it and see. I know you are not sold on Audacity, but there is a Linux version and it is packaged with Ubuntu. You can check out NewEgg.com or BuyCheapSoftware.com to see if you can get an OEM version of Windows XP for a more affordable price since you don't have your installation CD. I agree with Ian... time for a fresh install of the OS with all the nagging issues you are having... just don't forget to backup your data.

We all start somewhere.... Try Advanced SystemCare (free) and CCleaner (also free)... They may help get rid of some of the crap/issues you have.

Did you get a copy of XP with your computer? If you did and you simply lost the disc, you can probably buy a replacement from the manufacturer for fairly cheap. Otherwise, its probably going to cost you an arm and a leg to buy a copy in the store, unless you can find a place to sell you an OEM version.

If anything, give the RC of Windows 7 a try. It's a free download and will work for a year.

Try the beta of win7. It works great on my amd 9600 quad with 4 gig and the 32 bit original 7000 beta. Most folks say the new RC candidate floating around is even better. It reminds me of XP when it first came out, fast, fairly stable, almost everything works

What you'll need:

* A blank DVD
* A PC with a DVD burner
* A PC for testing with these system requirements:
o 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
o 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
o 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
o DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Well I'd go at least 4 gig of ram and whatever else you can upgrade cheaply, I doubt 1 gig would run anything very well and as long as you have DDR2 or better it's pretty cheap now. Regular DDR is getting spendy and harder to find. I did a fresh upgrade to the newer quad core 9600 with 4 gig and a ATI 3870x2 to a new 400 gig drive so I didn't have to burn my old boot drive in case it all didn't work out I could step back to my old XP install.
Other thing would be the fastest CPU that board can run and a up to date video card. As long as you have enough memory and stick with 32 bit that combo will PROBABLY run it somewhat acceptably for starters.
