Pioneer BDR-S03J 8x Blu-ray Disc Writer Out In Japan

Pioneer's new 8x Blu-ray Disc writer has hit stores in Japan. According to Akiba PC Hotline, the BDR-S03J is going for about 36,000 Yen, or $399US.

What's the difference between this model vs. the BDR-203? Is there any1 who owns the BDR-203 that has a photo to show what country make the BDR-203? As I notice the S03J is made in Japan. But rather than that, the spec. looks about the same

The BDR-S03J has a fancy bezel and it looks like it has the same honeycomb noise reducing stuff that their Japanese-only DVD writers have.

I don't care about the noise. But what about that dust proof feature? Pioneer Electronics of USA didn't talk about it.
So does BDR-203 has it?

I haven't heard of the BDR-203 having the dust proof feature either.

Do you think it's a nice feature? BEcause I think BD-R media is not cheap, if it is a real feature, not some hype up advertising feature, then some of us should consider go for it.

Say if there is just a bit of dust on the inside, as the disk is burn, the dust may obstruct the burning.

You're going to get dust in there no matter what due to the way tray mechanisms are designed. If anything, it may extend the life of the drive a bit.

Some of the LDC and BIS values are just horrible (especially the discs burned at 6x and 8x)
but the burned discs still get a good TRT (transfert rate test)

So I really don’t know what to think


1°) is it still time to keep the fingers away from BD burning and especially from this Pioneer BDR-203 burner
like what Halc suggest here:

I wouldn't call it unreliable yet but there hasn't been enough testing to see if it is accurate. My gut says that it isn't.

I'd like to see some write quality tests with Lite-On's BD combo drives to see how the results compare to the DH-4O1S.

I have a no. of questions:
1) What's Lite On doing in here? What is LIte On going to deal w/ these tests?

2) In those speed graph, what's the yellow line vs. green line means? i.e., what's the legend for the speed of the Pioneer, is it yellow or green?

3) Why on earth does it take 1.5 hr. to burn a 50 GB? AT 2X? Is that Pioneer way of telling us the technology is not there yet or are these media manufacturer to lazy to make 8X BD-R DL 50GB?

4) When a 50GB is burn, does it use CLV (1.5 hr) or P-CAV (40 min)?

5) Is there any chance that this unit can't burn on a Sony media (for e.g.) but can burn on a TDK media? As there are other burners out there that some users claim it has problem burning on certain brand name media.

6) What's LDC and BIS and TRT? And how does these 3 thing affect the accuracy of the data after burned?

ON a sidenote, Panasonic already have 6X BD-R 50GB media, I can't believe it. Sony is still at 2X, and TDK is still at 4X

1. Lite-On seems to be taking more of an interest than they have in the past due to their partnership with Plextor and the PlexUtilities software they wrote for them. My impression is that Lite-On understands BD write quality testing about as well as everyone else (which isn't well at all) and their software is just spitting out the data from the Mediatek chipset. Is it accurate? Is it correct? Who knows at this point.

2. Green is write speed. Yellow is RPM.

3. That's how long it takes at 2x. No one makes 8x BD-R media yet. 6x is the fastest.

4. The Pioneer uses Z-CLV when writing at 8x.

5. It varies from drive to drive. Some will write to certain media at one speed, where others will write to it at another speed. It's been this way for many years with CD and DVD writers.

6. Google will tell you what they stand for, but I have yet to read a good description as to how they relate to writing quality.

And lastly, TDK does make 6x 50GB BD-R media.

I used this word « horrible » because because for the scan I reported from the review made by YSS
you have the values:
Average LDC = 85.93
BIS max = 22
And it should be:
Average LDC < 13
max BIS < 8

Well till we get proper scanning drives we may have to go back to the does it play on all machines I try method The few bd-re disks I have made with my LG bd/hd burner reader have played in every machine we tried em in so far, A OLD pansonic bd-10a, Samsung, Sony bd-350 I think etc.
I played one of the disks all the way through on my 10a and it was stable just like the original was.
I remember playing with my 811 burners and it sometimes made disks that tested excellent and wouldn't play on anything, other burners would make so so disks that always worked, even after I was also able to test jitter levels.
