Weird problem of SH-S203D after clean re-install of XP Pro S

Postby Mikey this way! on Thu Aug 28, 2008 11:07 pm

Hi!

I switched back from Vista Business to XP Pro SP2 recently. The XP install is a clean one (from scratch).

Ever since am in XP I notice that DVD Burning was slow never went up above 6~7x speed. Then I realised that the burner is in PIO mode. I don't know how it went into it but, I selected DMA if Available but, it still remained in PIO mode. So, I un-installed the Secondary Channel and restarted XP and then it switched to UDMA5 mode.

After that I burned to coasters and whenever I start a benchmark in Nero CD DVD Speed the Nero App freezes. You can press buttons but, nothing happens. If you start My Computer Windows will not show you the Drive list. If you have to re-start the PC you have to hard reset.

I then found that after sometime the burner automatically switches back to PIO mode. It seems Nero CD DVD Speed runs properly in PIO mode and the system locks when I try to run it when the burner is in UDMA5 mode.

I don't seem to know why this is happening as everything was working fine under Vista Business.

My Hardware/Software Confing is as follows:

Windows XP Pro SP2 (with all updates till date)
Nero 7.11.10.0

AMD Athlon64 3200+
ASUS M2N8-VMX Mobo - http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?model ... 101&l3=349
Transcend 4 GB RAM DDR2-800 in Dual Channel Mode
Samsung SH-S203D SB00
2x Hitachi 160 GB 7200 rpm HDDs

I am using Windows IDE Drivers and not of nVidia. I am not able to understand why this is happening suddenly.

The Nero Logs of 2 coasters I burn't are as below. Please note that I tried burning this two DVDs when the burner was forced into UDMA5 mode.

Yeah, XP will set it to PIO mode if it encounters a certain number of errors. It can be a bit annoying.

You've already done most of the stuff I'd suggest. On top of what you've done, I'd check the BIOS to make sure UDMA is enabled there and try another IDE cable.

Yup it is enabled. The screen after POST also confirms that the drive is in UDMA 5 Mode. :(

Thanks for your PM BTW.

Just installed the latest nVidia IDE Drivers (MCP61) in place of default MS ones and voila Nero CD-DVD Speed has started functioning in UDMA 5 Mode. Lets see the rest.

Hurray! :D :D

Burn completed in Nero 7 flawlessly @ 16x in about 5.40 mins. LOL

This time the opposite was the solution. I had to install nVidia IDE Drivers in place of MS ones.

It definately is. I thought I have to re-install Windows XP and all Apps again :(

I also nearly installed XP SP3 but, didn't at the last moment. Thought I should try nVidia drivers first :D
