Burning .mkv files

Postby hoxlund on Wed Jun 04, 2008 2:09 pm

Ok lately ive been downloading a LOT of bluray movies (.mkv), i would love to burn these movies and play them back on my ps3

i have the LG bluray burner, what is the process for burning .mkv files for playback?

sorry kind of a newbish question and i could google it but i come directly to the most knowledgable source

just upgraded isp speeds, pay for 15Mb service, getting 20Mb down and 2.2Mb up, so your typical bluray .mkv of 12-15GB downloads in just under an hour, just put in my second 1TB hard drive yesterday

my media server has 2-1TB hard drives, 320gb hard drive, windows runs off a raptor x 150gb

all displaying on a sharp aquos 46" 10,000 contrast 1080p

I've been downloading a bunch of anime lately and most of it is in .mkv (matroska) format. I'm not a big fan of .mkv but its becoming more popular because you can include things like subtitles in them.

I don't know of any Blu-ray software that supports .mkv natively. You may be able to import it if you have the correct codecs (http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html). Otherwise you may need to convert it to another format first.

playing is not a problem on the computer, media player classic or zoom is a great option because they support full 6.1 audio which i need

but for burning to bluray disc, what is the standard file format for those?

Most will let you import MPG, AVI, MOV, etc. I'm not sure what to do with the 6.1 audio though.

Hi.
Hox - nice primary system.. when can I steal it?

@Ian and Hox - no way to play native .mkvs on the PS3.You're going to need to use mkv2vob to convert them into a PS3-friendly .mp4 file.
I use a 16GB pen drive, convert my files.. takes ~30 min on an X2 @2.6Ghz.

Then you're going to need to convert the files to a format compatible with whatever Blu-ray authoring software you have.
