Circuit City Trading In HD DVD for Blu-Ray Players

Good news for those that bought an HD DVD player at Circuit City.

According to a Circuit City employee in Chicago, the consumer electronics chain is trading in HD DVD players bought into their stores "within 3 months of the announcement," as opposed to their 30-day return policy. According to the internal memo announcing the demise of the format, they will either give customers a Blu-ray player—paying the price difference, if any—or a gift card. The trade-in, however, will not be widely promoted and it will be only made available if the customer asks for it. Have any of you tried this?

As first reported by Gizmodo earlier today (and confirmed at a Washington-area Circuit City this afternoon by High-Def Digest), the unpublicized offer is giving in-the-know customers a second chance at making the jump to high-def.

It's great to see some companies offering their customers a chance to take back their decision to buy into HD DVD. A lot of people were sold on it based on uneducated sales rep's making poor suggestions. Although I personally believe a person should always educate themselves before making a major purchase, I know a lot of people really rely on the electronics store salesperson to guide them.

Hopefully Bestbuy and Walmart will put something in place for their customers also, although i'm not holding my breath for it.

Anyone know who were the biggest HD DVD hardware retailers?

I'm fairly sure it was Bestbuy and Walmart, but Amazon is a possability also. I know for movie sales Bestbuy and Amazon were #1 and #2, with Walmart #3. I generally believe that B&M stores still have a stronger presence for hardware sales then e-tailers though, which is why I think Walmart would be higher then Amazon in this case. All speculation though. I doubt it was Circuit City or Sam's Club however
