Why no silver Blu-Ray drives?

Postby henrybizon on Sat Dec 15, 2007 7:47 am

Anyone buying a DVD drive can choose the bezel colour from the usual options of silver, black and beige. Some manufacturers put all three bezels into their retail boxed products.

Many people today, investing in a Blu-Ray drive will be fitting it in a Media Centre computer. There are hundreds of HTPC cases out there, designed to complement the style of your AV equipment. AV equipment is invariably silver or black. So where are all the silver-bezelled Blu-Ray drives? All I can find are black or beige and what kind of tasteless individual is going to build a beige HTPC?

You would think that for the high prices, which Blu-Ray currently commands, the manufacturers could throw a couple of additional bits of silver plastic in with the deal. Why are their marketing people so clueless?

The market is still too small for drive manufacturers to start offering colors other than beige and black. Once the price comes down and more consumers start to buy them, you'll start to see things like interchangable bezels.

I hear you about the price. For what some of these companies want, they should be including extra bezels. Would it kill them to include a non stripped down version software bundle too?
