Netflix Users Favor HD DVD

The overall numbers are small, but HD DVD is preferred by more than 2 to 1 over at Netflix.

You have to wonder how much of this is due to Blockbuster favoring Blu-ray. I can see a lot of HD DVD fanboys signing up for Netflix just for this reason.

Coming from someone who just spent close to $500 to be an early adopter of the Blu-ray high-definition video disc format, these recent trends at Netflix.com came as something of a disappointment. Not only are very few Netflix shoppers — among the most enthusiastic of home video consumers — interested in Blu-ray, but the competing HD-DVD format is actually the more popular choice among the few Netflix visitors who care. During the period of June through August 2007, Compete observed the following:

I know a lot of HD DVD fanboys switched to Netflix from Blockbuster when Blockbuster announced they'd support Blu-Ray exclusively in over a thousand stores.

That's pretty interesting. Didn't Netflix recently state that HD DVD and Blu-ray customer usage is equal according to their own statistics?

Then again, they also said "demand is small" while multiple HD DVD and Blu-ray customers report having to wait weeks or months to actually get a title. If demand was so small, there wouldn't be huge wait times...

Something is a bit odd with these numbers. If HD DVD is favored, why are nearly twice as many people viewing the Blu-ray genre?

Sizing up Blu-Ray's selection maybe? I doubt there's a conspiracy...
