Holographic storage is a technology that can store information at high density inside photopolymers. Current storage techniques such as DVD use multiple layers to store information on the volume.
In specific terms, the BD-ROM AV format (used by commercial movies) defines separate BD-Video and BD-Live profiles, each outlining several advanced capabilities that must be supported in their respective conforming players and software. These include local (persistent) storage, Virtual File System (VFS), picture-in-picture (PiP), audio mixing (secondary audio) and Internet connection through a network (see chart).
...that hasn't been a seamless experience. BD discs with BD-J features such as the "Liar's Dice" game on Pirates of the Caribbean are notorious for taking as long as 2-3 minutes just to boot up on some standalone players..
