Why do some websites insist on plagiarizing?

What was that?

Postby Ian on Thu Aug 16, 2007 4:40 pm

Still at it..

If you read the small print at Computerworld, it says "This article is reprinted by permission from Reuters.com". Does cdrinfo have permission? I doubt it.

My lord, why don't they just give credit to the original source. Is it that f-ing difficult?

Well, that would at least be the first step. They'd have to stop copying the entire article as well.

I think it is just plain laziness and I am a mod over there... but I am not here to defend them; I really don't know them at all. It's just my opinion.... And I have no problem with this thread. I read it and wonder why myself. Nothing I can do about it... I'm just a forum dweller.

I used to be the admin of a web site:
http://insite.beyondunreal.com

...and I think the way we did stuff similar to that (the correct way I believe) was to quote a few things from the article, post a link to the article and then give our interpretation of it. I think to post the whole article is kinda lame, especially without giving credit for it or a link to it.

I wasn't going to bring this up but since dailytech.com and blu-ray.com have both linked to it.. here we go.

I gotta give them credit for doing a great job of translating the original article and cleaning it up, but when it comes down to it, the paragraph structure and content is essentially the same.

Also, if you look at their Nero 8 preview, they're burning music that was obviously downloaded. Crappy music too.

Now they're borrowing content from Wikipedia.

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/De ... wsId=21547

A few key examples..

Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an optical disc technology which would hold up to 3.9TB of information

Taken from - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc

Holographic storage is a technology that can store information at high density inside photopolymers. Current storage techniques such as DVD use multiple layers to store information on the volume.

Well, with Wikipedia's stellar reputation, it's possible that the plagiarism is going either way. ;)

I guess Reuters doesn't really care if you rip off their content.

I love how they can take bits and pieces from other websites and put together an article that looks like their own. Latest example:

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/De ... wsId=21745

It looks like a great article until you realize that a lot of the content is taken word for word from other places.

A couple of examples:

http://www.emedialive.com/Articles/Read ... leID=11397

In specific terms, the BD-ROM AV format (used by commercial movies) defines separate BD-Video and BD-Live profiles, each outlining several advanced capabilities that must be supported in their respective conforming players and software. These include local (persistent) storage, Virtual File System (VFS), picture-in-picture (PiP), audio mixing (secondary audio) and Internet connection through a network (see chart).

and

http://www.ultimateavmag.com/features/907bdint/

...that hasn't been a seamless experience. BD discs with BD-J features such as the "Liar's Dice" game on Pirates of the Caribbean are notorious for taking as long as 2-3 minutes just to boot up on some standalone players..

It's been awhile since I had time to check one of their articles. It appears that they're still at it. They added a few lines at the end and did a few edits, but its still a blatant rip off.

They must not have felt like rewriting ZDNet's blog post today. It's almost word for word.

CDRinfo seems to be a sinking ship... Basically the forums there are spam bait and myself and the other active mod there voiced concerns in the mod area... seems they fell on deaf ears. I suggested they pack it in. I spend more time in other forums anymore. That was once a decent place to dwell, but anymore it just plain sucks.
