Processor speed question

Hello

I've been upgrading a desktop PC and have been fitting a few new components including a DVD writer.

The system is an ex corporate Compaq Evo with a pentium 4 1.7Ghz processor.

The DVD writer is a Lite-On LH-20. On the box it says minimum processor spec P4 1.8Ghz. Is this going to be a problem if I fit it in this system with a slightly slower clock speed processor?

I wouldn't burn faster than 8x with that system and don't multi-task during a burn... it will probably be fine.

On a similar system with a LG 16 speed burner, I noticed that the write speed was very erratic when set to maximum.

Although the discs wrote OK different coloured bands could be seen on the disc surface.

I've burned many DVDR's at 16x on a Compaq EVO running a 1.8 GHz processor with absolutely no issues at all...

IMO, it has more to do with disc I/O than CPU speed. If your hard drive can spit the data out fast enough when writing at 16x, then go for it. As SithTracy pointed out, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to multitask though.

A lot of time those specs have more to do with the bundled software and what is considered acceptable for that to run properly than the drive itself.

As long as you don't multitask much with burning and have a good 7200RPM hard drive in it you should be fine. If it's not running in tip-top shape you may have issues, though.
