Memory Brand DVD+R and DVD-R Media

I recently received some media from a company called Morgan Media Holdings (http://meganmedia.com.my) in Malaysia. The company is primarily an OEM supplier but they also sell their discs under the brand "Memory".

I received the discs a couple of weeks ago and while the manufacturing isn't up to say Verbatim, they're definitely on par with some of the Taiwanese manufacturers like Ritek.

To make a long story short, I burned a few discs using some of the drives I currently have installed.

First up is the Lite-On LH-20A1L. Using the BL02 firmware, the drive wrote to both the DVD+R and DVD-R media at 16x. The jitter and PI errors were a bit shakey with Memory's DVD+R media but their DVD-R discs yielded some decent results.

Next is the Samsung SH-S203B with the SB00 firmware. Here too, the drive wrote to them at 16x. In both cases, the writing quality was pretty good.

Lastly, I tried my trusty BenQ DW1640 with the BSLB firmware. Surprisingly, the drive wrote to Memory's DVD+R media at 16x but their DVD-R discs were limited to only 8x.

The writing quality was pretty good with Memory's DVD-R media but with their DVD+R discs, there were a few PIF spikes. I haven't rerun the test yet so I don't know if this was a fluke or what.

I also tried an LG GSA-H42N and GSA-H55L. While Megan Media claims that the 42N will write to their media at 12x or 16x, both drives wouldn't write at anything faster than 4x.

Megan Media has specifications and a list of supported drives on their website, which is relatively up to date.

In Germany MJC-Media is selled also as Emtec, but Emtec uses more manufacturers, also FTI and CMC

Lite On on +R definately has a support issue !
-R is that rise through disc quality or bad support ?

Again rising on -R with benq and samsung. So I'm thinking it's because of the batch quality.

First conclusion is ok media, but support need some works and also quality controle on -R might be a bit more tight to make it perform better as ok.

Try a 1655 if you have one and see how it does, mine doesn't have the spikes at the end like my 1640 did.
The LGh62l and h22n might do OK as well. Looks like might be good bargain media if most drives do that well with it.

I bought a spindle of JVC-branded DVD+R discs that were MJC ME media codes (Sorry, can't find the specific code) and they ended up being horrible-- they had adequate scanning results right after burning (not much different than most "2nd tier" media-- I was actually fairly pleased with them) but about 50% of them failed within 3-6 months!! (either entirely unreadable, or took a LOT of work in order to find a drive that would read them and even then read speeds would dip to like 0.2x and take hours to get the data off)

Definitely THE WORST media experience I've ever had. At least the worst-of-the-worst CMC stuff tends to not even make it through the burn process.

It's been about 2 years but I seriously hope this longevity issue has been rectified before these discs are unleashed on the public. I know we have a rep from the company and I am not trying to slam them, instead express my serious concerns as to their product. All discs were burned on either a Plextor 716 or LG H10, usually around 4x (discs were rated at 8x).

Justin, i'm so sorry to hear about your experience with the JVC discs. The MJC MID code does indeed belong to us, and i'm concerned about your observation. You complaint may well be true, but i can assure you, the new management of the company is not what it was 2 years ago.

Quality of the customer experience is of utmost importance, which is why i sent our discs to Ian for review in the first place. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say. Send me a note, and i'll shoot some more samples over to you when we're ready to sell in your neck of the woods.

Until then, no more "commercial" type postings from me. I don't want to get banned by the mods. If you guys have any more questions / feedback on Memory, shoot them my way.

I've got some JVC DVDRs with MJC code also, I can do a side by side comparison on them when I test the sent media

I'm really looking forward to trying this stuff out. I ALMOST did it last night... but I decided I needed a minimum 3 hours of sleep before work

Megan Media Holdings Bhd’s subsidiary Memory Tech Sdn Bhd (MTSB) has received a notice of termination from Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV (Philips) for its Veeza agreements.

In a statement to Bursa Malaysia on Aug 24, Megan Media said MTSB had on August 21 been demanded to immediately cease the manufacture and sale of DVD-R discs, DVD+R discs and CD-R discs using any one or more of Philips’ Malaysian patents.

MMSB, can you comment at all on this?
