CDRLabs DVD Writer Poll - June

Postby Ian on Mon Jun 04, 2007 1:44 pm

Vote for what you think is the best, all around DVD writer. By doing so, you'll hopefully help those looking to buy a new drive. Once again, I tried to chose original drive designs that are currently available or will be soon.

Feel free to leave comments and an explanation as to why you voted the way you did. Also, if there's a drive you'd like to see added to the poll, let me know.

For reference, here's the top drives from April's poll:

1. Pioneer DVR-111/A11
2. LG GSA-H42N/L
3. Pioneer DVR-112/DVR-212/DVR-A12
4. (tied) Lite-On LH-20A1H/LH-20A1P/LH-20A1S and Plextor PX-760A/SA

And I added a few:

It's painful every time I have to pick just one drive (see sig!) but I voted for the Pioneer 111 series, which is a very good all-round burner. It's not a particularly good reader and not a very useful scanner, however.

My second choice would be the LiteOn 20A1 series, which are better readers and scanners, but which have other quirks and are not quite as good burners in my experience.

I'm not voting for any drive I haven't tested personally, but if I had to choose a drive I haven't tested (yet), I'd choose the Pioneer 112 series which seems a good followup to the 111 series, from what I've seen.

There's a bunch of LG drives in the poll, and multiple models of other drives, but why no Sony NEC Optiarc drives?

(Not that it would change my vote)

June poll

Postby bicomputational on Mon Jun 04, 2007 9:21 pm

Voted for the Pioneer 111 again, although I suppose it won't be on the
list much longer, due to lack of availability. Had a horrible experience with the LG 42, which I had high hopes for, but which couldn't burn a cd without
major c2 errors. Had to RMA. No one ever seems to vote for the Samsung
182/3/4 series, although they are spoken of highly on New Egg and in a very nice CD Freaks review. How about a discussion of your second favorite drive when you vote, the drive that compliments your no. 1, or some older drive you can't live without.
My vote in that category would go to the BenQ 1655.

The drive I can't live without would certainly be my BenQ DW1640. I'll go crazy when both my DW1640's go belly up. But then at least I'll have my BenQ DW1620's, BenQ DW1650 and BenQ DW1655 to console me.

I think I like BenQ drives too much :P

It's the crappy drives that screw you, not the good ones.

If my Pioneer 212's could overburn, I'd vote them tops. Without that, it's hard to say for me. Up until SATA, my NEC 3500A did just fine.

How is ASUS's recent SATA drive shaping up? Any firmware updates change it for better/worse?
