CMC To Have DVD+RW DL and DVD-RW DL Media At Computex

Postby Ian on Sun May 27, 2007 4:20 pm

I was poking around the Computex website, looking at some of the problems companies will have on display at Computex. One of the things that caught my eye was CMC's Double Layer DVD+RW and Dual Layer DVD-RW. Here's a full list:

It looks like they're also going to have 8x DVD-R DL, 8x DVD+R DL, 18x DVD-R and 18x DVD+R.

Are there any drives on the market currently, which will read and write Double/Dual Layer RW media?

Not yet but we should see Lite-On models capable of doing this very soon.

8x Dual layers are not that new.

The rewritables are. That is if it's real working media and not the standard trade show mock-ups.(See last years blu ray/hd-dvd recordable disc's from manufacturers who still can not produce these types of media)

18x media is probably just the 16x stuff but then uprated to 18x.

Still this makes me wonder CMC had 2 16x codes for both formats will they upgrade one or both codes. Yeah I know so far we've seen only on each format.

I've bot a couple 25 disc spindles of Philips branded 8X CMC +R DL's, work and scan quite well with newer LG & Liteon drives.

CMC 2.4x +R DL media is next to impossible to find in the US. I doubt we'll ever see their 8x +R DL or -R DL over here.

Unless you order it through MAM-A, or Philips, in which case it's extemely easy to get :P

I've had a spindle of CMC 8x DVD+RDLs sitting on my desk for a long time now. Horrible drive support, and nothing burns it at 8x properly.

I agree, older (ie one year  ) drives don't like them at all, none at 8x, but I've had good luck with them at 4X in my LG 22 & 50N's, as well as the Liteon 20S & H. Can't remember if I've tried the Pioneer 112D, the 111D didn't like them.

I've had much better luck with them in my Pioneer DVR-111 at 4x then my LG H22L. Still not what I would call acceptable from so called 8x media though.

It's too bad the the CMC DL stuff is so poorly supported by drive manufacturers. It could actually wind up being decent DL media at lower prices, but if none of the drives support it correctly, there is no need to get it. [-X

Drives will support it eventually. It took forever for Ritek's DL media to get support.

On sale here in W Canada the CMC DL's are within a dime per disc of Verbatims DL's on sale. If I could find them appreciably cheaper than Verb I'd buy a bunch, I get 91%+ scans on them with both CDSpeed and DVDInfo Pro(using BenQ 1655), and they playback perfectly on my stand alone players.
*Note* First spindle I had would either give a great scan or be a coaster, about a 90% success rate (using strictly LG 22N). After updating the 22N's firmware have had no more coasters, the 50N and Liteons haven't produced any at all. Started using the 50N and Liteons on the second spindle, have only burned about 45 total.
I might have been mistaken about the Pioneer 111 not liking them, it could have been the BenQ's.

What about HP !

:o :o :o What drives :o :o :o . Based on the magazine tests results in front of me featuring the whole total market the average score of less then 30%. That is not good. And incase of the results I can say that you can not only blame the drive manufacturers foor poor support.

I don't see HP DVD+RDL around here. I think a few places in the USA might carry it, but it's not a big seller or well promoted.

We should have heard something about the Lite-On DH-18W3P/H, DH-18A3P/H, DH-20W3P/H and DH-20A3P/H back in April. Maybe at Computex?

Lite-On won't be adding support for DVD+RW DL until this fall. That comes on the A4 and W4 series.
