Plextor PX-810SA - 10x DL Write and SATA

Any guesses as to the actual manufacturer? I thought it might be based on the AD-7170S but it only has 8x DL writing speeds.

The guess over at CDFreaks is that it's a Pioneer DVR-212 clone:

I haven't looked into it myself yet, so I have no opinion on the guess.

Pioneer DVR-212 would be my guess also, just from looking at the specs.

That's a good point. In the past, Plextor's non-Premium drives didn't work with Plextools (or even include it in the US) but it says that this one comes with PlexTools Professional LE. Maybe the scanning functions aren't there?

I'd have to agree that its a Pioneer DVR-212. The dimensions are very close.

Sorry, I'm done with that. Even removed the Plextor SCSI's from the wife's machine a month ago (she now has the LiteOn 167T DVD-ROM and NEC 3500A burner that used to be in my machine). Which reminds me, I need to sell that combo on Ebay, since their SCSI burners are still a commodity.

I have nothing against Plextor --but their business model is, IMO, making them irrelevant.

Correct, we will no longer see any "real" Plextor designed drives, all they will do is rebadge from now on...

And I won't buy rebadged junk. When the PX-740A came out, I already had a BenQ DW1640... I saw this coming when they did that. It's a shame. Might have to see some of my Plextor SCSI stuff on eBay too... I've got a couple of UltraPleX readers downstairs in the basement anlong with several other old drives... heck a friend of mine is still running my old UltraPleX 32 with an old Ricoh MP-6200S... that's some old stuff.

I hope Plextor has plans for a better business model. I don't think true Plextor users are going to be fooled into paying more for a drive just because Plextor put their name on it. But, flash media is getting cheaper, bigger, and more popular, it could replace ODD.

Heh, I was digging through some old equipment and found my old external Ricoh 6200S. Pretty awesome burner for the time, especially once the firmware update that fixed the "full volume clicking noise at the start of each CD" problem came out. Thing is built like a tank and probably still works fine.

Yeah, they're disappearing. K&M and Atelco still have some- you're looking at 80 Euros for a bulk model. Atelco even has the odd 716 too.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that this is a Pioneer. Their new portable drive, the PX-608CU, is based on the Pioneer DVR-K16.

That would REALLY suck!

If that's the case, Pioneer needs to get their ass in gear. We've been hearing about their second gen Blu-ray writer for months and what do we get? A combo drive. If they hold back like they did with the BDR-101A, their second gen drive is going to be old tech before it even ships.
