I just ordered one from Directron.com... they got them on sale right now. Hoping there are ways to add features to the drive like bitsetting and DVD-RAM writing support in the future... But I wanted to try a Pioneer drive and did not want to use the Jmicron IDE controller on my board anymore.

Requested an RMA on my 212D... Tried to burn a CD with various APPs and they all died immediately. The thing burns DVD+/-R (+DL)'s great, just can't burn CD's... (Audio or data). Anyone else have similar issues?

I am having the exact same issue with the Pioneer 212 that I just picked-up... It will read blank DVD media just fine, but it just wont read a blank CD-R with Nero or otherwise, well actually, it worked once, but 90% of the time it just freezes up. Any more insight into this Sith?

Awaiting an RMA... I made the mistake of not burning a CD under the 1.09 fw... I was going on vacation after I got the drive. When I returned 1.15 was out so I flashed... DVD burns were great... I then tried a CD burn and it started the burn but failed... Just burns long enough to coaster some damn good discs (Maxell CD-R Pro's/Taiyo Yuden's). Using latest Intel AHCI drivers on a P965 (Asus P5B Deluxe mb)... My Plextor PX-755SA is a solid performer so I am confident it is not the SATA on the board. Will post back after I get the replacement. Probably by the end of the week.

I was hoping to get some experiences from users here and on cdfreaks forum. I was worried that 1.15 might have broke something, but no way to confirm. Not heard from anyone on this until now. Are you still on 1.09 or up to 1.15?

I also have an Asus P5-B deluxe motherboard, but I don't recall if I have the latest drivers or not; I did do a fresh Windows XP Pro install about 6 weeks ago and had the latest drivers at that time. I can also tell you that I had the exact same problem with FW 1.09 and then I flashed to 1.15 in hopes that it would solve the issue, but both firmwares proved to create the same outcome. I also have an Asus 1814blt SATA DVD burner working perfectly on this motherboard. I even switched the SATA channels as well as using the non-intel SATA, but again same results. The only other device I have on a SATA controller is a Seagate .10 320GB hard Drive. Here is a quick look at my specs if it helps:

Asus P5b Deluxe
Core 2 Duo
Nvidia 7900 GT
2 GB DDR2 6400
320 GB Seagate 7200.10 sata
160 GB Hitachi 7k250 IDE

Pioneer DVR-212D fw1.15 (pending RMA)
all packed into a roomy, though unsatisfying, Enermax Phoenix case (Antec ticked me off on an RMA issue and I vowed never to own any Antec product again).

I'm guessing your drive burns DVD's well, just not CD's. Always liked Pioneer equipment, but it always a gamble to buy something new from anyone and this is their first attempt at SATA. Looking forward to getting the replacement. I hope this is just coincidence since no one else seems to be posting on the issue.

I forgot before I shipped the "defective" Pioneer out, I tried it in my Asus A8N-SLI and had the same results.

You are going to enjoy this: I played around with my Pioneer 212D and I can now read CD-R's just fine!! Unfortunatley,now it won't work with any of the DVD+/-R's I own in the same manner as the CD-R's before. Time to take it back I guess...

It looks like The Dangerous Brothers have a crossflash to make the 212D a 212... My replacement isn't here to guinea pig it on, anyone else game? I think all it adds is DVD-RAM support. Not sure if you can bring it up to 1.15 afterwards...

Still waiting on my RMA drive did not show today... Did anyone try TDB's firmware... I see that have new RPC1 versions for the 212 and 212D... Just wondering if the 1.08 worked because it has been pulled from TDB's site.

I have a couple of them due to an RMA mistake... Have the latest firmware on the one I have installed on my P965 based rig, will probably put the other one in my nForce4 SLI rig when I have time. This is my first Pioneer DVD burner... perhaps my expectations were a bit high with all the Pioneer fans praising their drives, but I consider it average... Does a great job with Verbatim DVD+R (though you can't bitset yet -- can't find a firmware for it that does), but I was disappointed with the Verbatim DVD-R writes... It did a great job with my Taiyo Yuden -R 8x media, but it's all gone now. I ordered an LG GSA-H62N (SATA based on Renesas chip in the H42/44 series drives)... waiting for that to replace my LG GSA-H22N so I can be all SATA and off of the damn Jmicron controller for good.

my last pioneer drive was the dvr-108

was a kickass reader, i would never use it as a dvd burner

thats what my plextor is for

i loved it because of the rip-speed unlock/rpc-1 firmware

but this drive does look promising especially since its a SATA drive

If that is what you are looking for, then you'll be pretty happy with it, but it has struggled reading some of my burned discs... Reminds me a bit of my old NEC ND-3500A, which could barley read a disc it burned.

Has anyone had any luck using the Dangerous Boys flash to a 212 from a 212D?

Whenever I try, it fails. It works okay to flash to the RPC1 212D, but if I try the 212, it fails.

There is not yet a crossflash for the Pioneer 212D to 212 (Pioneer or Buffalo) drive that I am aware of... Not sure if if works with ala42's MCSE.

Hmm... I thought there was, but I must have misunderstood.

I was under the impression you could just flash using the flasher for a different drive, and it'd work, if it was the same hardware (which it is in this case, right?)

It's the same hardware... the difference is the "D" series does not write to DVD-RAM.... Neither the 212 or the 212D can bitset to DVD-ROM... for that you need the Buffalo firmware. TDB posted a crossflash for about a day in their beta some time ago but quickly pulled it.

If you need DVD-RAM and bitsetting, I am hearing that the Samsung SH-203B is an outstanding drive... Ordered one and waiting for it to arrive.
