I found these listed on a pricegrabber search about 30 minutes ago on the Pioneer DVR-212D SATA.

Any idea how this relates to a 111?

Is it basically the same but been upgraded to 18X?

Wow, cool! I'm shocked (in a good way) to see this in the US. I think I'll definitely pick it up sooner than later, since I need a Pioneer burner in my system (love their quality) but am out of IDE ports. (stupid Intel mobos)

Is there firmware to enable DVD-RAM/auto bitset for the 212 yet?

Just ordered one for my dad since he needs an optical drive anyways, and this allows him to go all SATA.

Yeah, I'm curious too. With the lack of pata on the new Intel mainboards I'm looking for a good sata writer, preferably with 12x -RAM support.

Signing up for two. Price is good, and the wife's system can get my DVD-ROM and DVD writer.

I'll kind of miss my NEC 3500A, but I've heard good things about the new Pioneer drives.

Only thing I'll need to figure out is whether to use my nForce4 SATA ports, or the Silicon Image ones (each controller has 4 ports). I'd rather use the Sil SATA ports and keep the nForce ones open for hard disks, but that may cause compatibility issues, so we'll see.

EDIT: EWiz appears to have (at least the black one) for $40 with free shipping:

btw, does anyone know if these drives do LightScribe or LabelFlash? Not a biggie to me, but interesting to know.

Will do. It comes in on Wednesday, since we bought it with 2nd Day Air, as it was only about $3 more than Ground. All I've really got for burning though is TYG03, along with some Verbatim & Acro Circle 16x DVD+R, whatever those MID's are.

NewEgg now has the drive too. Similar price as MWave. Only saw it available in black.

When it rains, it pours; supplies must have just flooded into the US all at once. Looks like the drive's release here is official.

Note: the MWave description said they included software, while NewEgg's lists as bare. We'll see if anything worthwhile is included (I'm guessing I'll get two copies of Nero Express).

I'm pretty sure that all of the Pioneer "D" models are stripped down versions that do not support DVD-RAM or any type of disc top writing (such as LightScribe or LabelFlash). None of the websites selling the drive mention any of these capabilities.

A crossflash might be possible though, but I'm not sure what the "non-D" version is capable of...

how i have waited for so long

quick question
is there any way to connect a sata dvd burner with an external enclosure using esata or of the sort?

the reason im asking is i prefer to not get an ide dvd burner as i pray it is going to be phased out
i know that the speed definitely does not need it
i just prefer it over usb though

I believe it is possible if you find the right enclosure.

I did a quick search online and could only find 2.5" and 3.5" enclosures with an eSATA option.

I'm sure there are some 5.25" models available somewhere though, because LG has an external DVD burner within an enclosure that has an eSATA port. I don't remember the exact model.

That is why I hesitate to get it. I have learned to like DVD-RAM support... I can live without it, but if it is possible to get it... NewEgg will be getting an order (not a fan of Mwave... bad experience in the past and I am not one to forgive when they make a mistake and charge me three times for an order and I had to fight with them to get it fixed).

Mine just came in this morning. mWave bundles the drives with Nero 7 Essentials, even though they're OEM.

Should have them up some time this weekend.

A suggestion to Ian: Doing a comparison between this drive and the ASUS DRW-1814BLT would make a great article/review.

Yeah, I still need to pick up both drives.

I'll probably be installing mine tonight. I could have sooner, but after the last month, I've been so burned out on IT from the day job that when I get home, my laptop on the couch with a good WiFi link seems a lot more comfy than working in my downstairs office.

Got a few freelance machines to work on tonight though, so I'll be down there finishing things up. I'll try and give a report Tuesday.

Okay. Drives are installed, and on my nForce4 Ultra SATA controller. My Mainboard BIOS identifies them properly. Firmware is listed as 1.09. Nero 6.6.1.15 recognizes them fine. Wrote a full dvd with my current Verbatim media (MCC 03RG20) at 8x, (V for Vendetta, if anyone wanted to know), which plays back fine on the same drive and scans just fine with Nero CD/DVD Speed. I really only bought two so I could go entirely SATA, I normally have one playback ROM drive and one writer, but they both seem to work fine.

I don't have a lot of fancy testing equipment, but at least I can say you don't need an Intel chipset for them to work properly. I haven't tried booting off them yet but I have no reason to think that they won't.
