Beware Imation 16x DVD-R made in India!

Postby 2Dogs on Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:49 pm

I recently bought a 50pk cakebox of the above - but would not recommend this media to anybody, based on tests with my burners! The Pioneer DVR111D did not even complete the burn.

By contrast, Imation 16x DVD+R, DAZON AZ3, made in Malaysia, seems very good.

Ouch! Sounds like a bad batch made by MBI.

Anyone else have this same media?

I wouldn't recommend ANYTHING made by Imation to anybody. I bought a 100 pack of CDRs from them that I think the only quality control was "Are they round? Mostly! Are they shiny? Sorta! Well, ship em!"

They're well below Memorex media in my book. (Even though they're the same company now, I think)

Some Imation discs are good

Postby 2Dogs on Sun Mar 04, 2007 5:06 pm

I wouldn't go that far - the Imation 16x DVD+R that I bought at the same time as this MBI stuff is fine - and my experiences with Memorex +RW and +R discs have not been great.

I would like to figure out an easy way of finding decent media, though, since quality control seems pretty loose these days by all accounts. With the +R stuff, at least both the Imation and TDK made in Malaysia DAZON AZ3 discs have been fine, with the Imation being the better of the two.

And Wesociety - Lastguyonthenet had some of this stuff, which showed pretty similar scans on his DW1655.

Hmm that might be quite hard to reproduce even if it says Made In India
Then it can still have 2 different MID's. (MCC004,MBI 03RG40)

And then there offcourse still imation disc's from other manufacturers. (optodisc,Prodisc, CMC,Daxon,Ritek to name some)
Trying to make something "foolproof" only forces nature to make a better fool.

TBH, I don't like MBI's own 16X -R Pro media either. The 16X +R media is much better.

I have to wonder if MBI recordable media quality will improve overall now that they have purchased Phillips optical technology division.
