LG GSA-H22N write issues

i was burning some backups on memorex 16x discs at 16x. ran out of discs on that spindle and opened another spindle of memorex 16x discs and started burning to one of them and it was only burning at 4x.

after trying a different spindle of discs it would only burn at 4x on those ones as well. ive downloaded and updated to the 1.01 firmware in these forums and it will still only let me burn at 4x.

i put the same disc in a pioneer 111d (in a different computer) and it will burn at 4x,6x,8x,12x, and 16x but in this LG it only burns at 4x. i find this strange since originally it was burning at 16x.

any idea how to get it to burn at 16x again? im using nero 6, and have tried nero 7.

It sounds like the first and second spindles were manufactured by different companies.

Can you tell us the MID for the discs? Use CD Speed (www.cdspeed2000.com) and click on Disc Info tab. From there, you can see the actual manufacturer and MID.

I'm guessing these are Memorex 16x DVD-R and that the second spindle are manufactured by Ritek. For some reason, the GSA-H22N does not write to RITEKF1 at anything faster than 4x.

You might try going to the "Nero Toolkit" and using the "Nero CD-DVD Speed" utility. From version 4.0 and up of that utility there's a check for the Disc Info.

If you need to download the latest version of CD-DVD Speed, it can be found here:

Try running the Disc Info check on the disc you were able to write to at 16x, and then again on the discs to which you could only write at 4x. It's possible the media is actually different, even though it all may be marked as Memorex 16x.

Here's a shot of the test on one of my old Memorex 4x +RW disks. The media type shows as PHILIPS 041 000 (00)

the MID on the old discs is CMC MAG. AM3 and on the new ones its RITEKF1.

edit: how are those new sata dvd writers that are around $30 on newegg. if i cant burn these 100 discs i have at 16x im just gonna buy a new burner.

edit: found another pack of em. there riteks to. what burner do you guys recommend, i would prefer a sata one and no more then like $45. internal as well.

Just check out the comprehensive burner reviews on this site.

I'm not saying they're your best choices, but the AOpen DSW1812P wrote to RitekF1 media at 16x, as did the ASUS DRW-1608P3S, Samsung SH-S182D, Sony DRU-830A for starters.

You'd probably get some of the above for around $30 at Newegg

There really aren't too many SATA drives out there. Looking at Newegg, you have ones from Lite-On, Samsung and Plextor. I've used the ATA version of the Plextor and its a great drive, but for what they're asking, you could buy 2 or 3 of the others. I have a few of the Lite-Ons, but I haven't used them enough to say whether or not they're decent or not. The Samsung? Still waiting for them to send me a test unit.

RITEKF1 is only supported at 4x in the firmware of H22N.

Looks like Panasonic based LG drives suffer from a lack of support for recent medias. RitekF1 only 4x, ProdiscR05, DaxonAZ2 and Daxon008S aren't supported and fallbacks to 4x.

The odd thing is, RITEKF1 is listed in the firmware. If you fire up MCSE and open the 1.01 firmware you see:

It must not be identifying it correctly. Either that, its a different revision.

. Older versions displayed the media speed which is stored in the media table, but not the speed supported by the write strategy of the firmware. When figuring out how 18x write speed was encoded, I stumbled over the write strategy tables, which contain the supported write speed. The current display should be accurate.

Thanks ala42. I was still using 1.0.9.3. Does this new version show the 20x writing speeds with Lite-On's new drives? I don't think it did with 1.0.9.3.

It does. Please check if the lists are ok and that MCC 03RG20, RITEKF1, MXL RG04 and DAXON016S are supported at 16x only with Overspeed burning disabled on LL05.

Yeah, that looks right. It blows my mind that Lite-On would support CMC MAG. AM3 at 20x but limit MCC 03RG20 to only 16x.
