LG sent me this for my review and since its not available for download yet, I figured I'd make it available here. Please link to this forum thread and not the file directly.

Thanks for posting this. I hope they do decide to send you 1.01 for the H22L since I think it needs an update much more than the 22N.

LG is making some great drives, but I find their support (or lack of) for them sucks. Seems instead of releasing a new firmware, they just release a new model. I guess I was spoiled by BenQ and their support of the DW1620/1640 drives. Perhaps their dedication to their product is why they had to bail out of the ODD industry. Still, I would like to see LG provide a little better support and firmware development on their drives. I have a GSA-H10A, that I made a H10N, and now H12N (using the Buffalo firmware).

LG has always catered to the OEM market first. If companies like Dell want a feature, they'll implement it. If not, they won't. This seems to be the driving force behind their firmware updates as well.

I bought a H22L from www.ncix.com a couple of days ago and it came with 1.01... so I'm guessing it can't be much longer until it is released.

Before I update the firmware to Version 1.01, it is better to backup the original Version 1.00 in case something goes wrong. Could you please provide a link for the flash program for backing up the Version 1.00 came with this drive? (Mtkflash cannot back up the firmware of this H22N drive, the chip set seems to be Panasonic not MTK.)

As far as I know, there isn't a way to extract the firmware from the GSA-H22N.

Hi folks,

I recently bought an LG GSA-H22N. I read a bunch of reviews first and all of them were pretty good, so I figured for $55 I can't go wrong. WRONG! Now I'm having the same problem that others have posted here. The drive smokes right along with a $3 DVD, but when I try to use a memorex or other cheap stuff she caves. I get 4x at best! My drive is already running V-1.01 of the firmware and I can't find an update anywhere. Is there a speed program or something somewhere that can fool my drive? I really don't want to rip or hack the firmware if I can help it for fear of screwing something up. Any ideas?

By the way, why all the proprietary BS? Is a 16x dvd not just a 16x dvd?
What sense does it make to have regulated compatibility? Are these people for real? :-?

Yes and no. While the media manufacturer may rate the disc at a certain speed, the drive manufacturer has to come up with a writing strategy. If there is no writing strategy, they will often use a default strategy and speed. In the case of the GSA-H22N, its 4x.

I am surprised that LG is not supporting RITEKF1 media yet. There is A LOT of it out there and thats all Memorex seems to be shipping these days.

I don't think the 1.00 firmware exists as an update. If it did, we would have seen a region free version of it.

Because, like an idiot, I managed to upgrade the firmware to 1.01 and only realized belatedly that it was the "N" variant and therefore no Lightscribe any more. Der.

Therefore don't care if it is original firmware or the new one!

My H22N has 1.01, and will write to the following in between 5:38 to 6:15. None of the discs cost more than $0:30 apiece and some were a lot less - I normally wait for them to be on offer.
