Burning Photos on CD-R for use in DVD player

Postby eitlobsaboo on Mon Dec 18, 2006 5:18 am

I have recently bought a new DVD/CD burner (ASUS DRW-1608P3S) and it came bundled with Nero v6.60.14d.

My folks have just came back from overseas & have bout 2-3GB worth of photos!!!

I tried burning them to DVD but that was a whole lot of fuss trying to 'compress' the still images to DVD format without loosing quality, however I didnt succeed and ended up with about 5 copies of my folks photos in various horrible qualities..

So i decided to break their holiday photos up into roughly 700mb chunks and spread them over a couple CD-R's.. However somehow its not as easy as i remember.

All i remember doing in the past is burning the jpeg image files to CD-R in "data" using an older copy of Nero that came with my previous now dead burner.

Now with with my new burner & newer version of Nero Express, I tried burning these photos to CD-R however my DVD player can't recognise the CD-R disc. It should! It reads all other discs, including photo CDs i've done in the past.

Is there some check boxes that need un/checking?

This is what i do:
1. Open Nero Express & choose 'Data Disc',
2. It then brings up a 'Disc Content' window and i click "Add"
3. I then select the desired photos and click "Add" then "Finish"
4. It then goes back to the 'disc content' window displaying the 628mb worth of files i have just added.

Here are my settings under "More\Configure"

General Tab:
'Check for correct disc format before burning' checkbox is checked
'Check Joliet file names before burning' checkbox is checked

Expert Features:
'Enable Disc-at-once CD overburning' is checked & max CD size is 82min
'clear archive bits of written files during ISO refresh' is checked

everything else is unchecked

Ultrabuffer
'Method - Automatic configuration'

5. I then click 'next'

Allow multisession & verify data are unchecked

Here are my settings under 'More'

'Write Method - Disc-at-once'
'Finalize disc' is shaded grey
'Determine maximum speed' & 'simulation' are unchecked
'Write' is checked

6. I then click 'burn' and thats it.

Am i doing anything wrong?

Are you just trying to archive them to disc or create a disc that is playable on your DVD player?

If you're just trying to archive them, you're doing it right by creating a data disc and copying the pics over. Unfortunately, this won't be playable on most DVD players.

If you want to create a photo slideshow, try NeroVision Express. As you've already noticed, the pictures will be shrunk down some to match the resolution of a DVD.

I'd recommend doing both.. archive the picturess so that you have them in the original quality and create a disc so that your parents can pop it in and show their pics to their friends.

Im trying to make a playable disc for my DVD player.

I remember all I did in the past was burn them to a CD-R and my DVD player recognised them as jpegs and they played brilliantly.

I dont want any fancy transitions or music or anything, just a simple slideshow.

I have 2.21GB of photos and if I can put them on 1 DVD-R disc then FANTASTIC.. however i dont want to loose any quality or have any flickering problems..

I'll give Nero Vision Express a go...

Hi there.

I have a LG DVD player.I burnt my entire photo collection over some DVD+R's in data DVD mode in Nero and finalized the disc. The photos play fine on the DVD player.I would recommend you to try burning those photos again on a RW with default burn settings.

That only works if the DVD player is designed to handle JPG files. A lot do, but many more won't have a clue what to do with it.

Ian's suggestion is probably the best.

Well....Now almost all the latest DVD players play JPG pics directly.I thought that eitlobsaboo has one of newer players.

And if the DVD player does not play JPG pics, Ian's solution is the only way to create a photo CD.

Even if they do play JPGs, many players don't do it very well, or have goofy interfaces and such. It's much easier when sending to the more technically-illiterate to just master a nice disc that they can just pop in, than having to explain how to navigate a folder structure. (plus you can add music and such if you use Nerovision. Some players can play MP3s embedded with the JPGs but it seems like a runaround to set it up playing)

It just depends on what you want, and who you're sending it to.
