Best media to test the 2nd "advanced" AutoStrategy

Postby frank1 on Sat Nov 25, 2006 5:43 am

In order to test the efficiency of the so called "advanced" AutoStrategy of the Plextor PX-760A with it’s new 1.05 firmware, many people suggest to use low quality media and eveen real fakes.
I have the possibility to get easily the following 4 brands of « doubtfull quality » DVD's:

1°) Gigatain DVD-R 8x [spindle of 25]
Made in Macau is printed on the side label of the spindles because I have seen them in a local store.
Unfortunaly I dont’ know the exact MID of these Gigatain branded disc’s before buying them
Are they still TYG02, or MCC 02RG20 ?
The link videohelp indicates that you could also get FujiFilm 03

2°) Gigatain DVD+R 8x [Made in Macau - spindle of 25]
Are they still Yuden000-T02, or MCC-003
Videohelp indicates that you could also get Ritek R03 or Plasmon1 C01

3°) Mirror DVD-R 8x - Number 7026X49 (spindle of 50, unfortunaly !)

4°) Bulkpaq DVD-R 8x (spindle of 50)
According to nierle’s selling links
you may have now for these discs a MID code like OPTODISC-R008 which is maybe not a real faked MID but just lower quality

So I like to have your advice about which are the « best ones » to get (from this local store) in order to test the advanced AutoStrategy
I was thinking about Gigatain DVD+R 8x Made in Macau because :
- the spindles are only of 25 (what to do for the discs which will be left ?)
- and because they got the worst rating in the tests made by c’t magazine:
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... &start=149
MediumRare wrote:The crassest example they found was Gigatain "Made in Macau" which initially used TY MID's, then switched to MCC
Maybe they these Gigatain DVD+R 8x have still the same YUDEN00-T02 MID code as in june 2005 when c’t mag tested them, but this is doubtfull ?

I thank you in advance for your opinion about the choice I should make ...

I have often read that the first AS that came out with th PX-716A was not realy efficient in practise, but that SolidBurn was working properly since the time of the BenQ DW1640.
So I like to have the opinion of you experts:
do you think that (in general) SolidBurn on a Benq or Philips burner is more efficient than this advanced AS of the PX-760A ?
I mean:

1°) for burning these type of fakes
2°) for burning different batches of the same MID but with uneven quality

BTW which BenQ burner is the best for SolidBurn: DW 1640, 1650, 1655 or an other one I miss ?

I haven't been impressed with the Autostrategy on my PX-716SA, I think BenQ's works much better, and LiteON's HyperTuning (at least on the SHW-1635S) works much better also!

With BenQ, I think the DW1640's implemintation was the best, compared to the BenQ DW1650 and DW1655.

I aggree on that point

That's why I want to test the 2nd or "advanced" AS that came out with the PX-755/760.
This 2nd 2nd works totaly differently than the 1st AS: at least the settings of this 2nd AS are very sophisticated !

SOLIDBURN is what I would I call real optimalisation unlike the first version of autostrategey.
I don't have enough good data on the 2nd version of autostrategy to know how it works.

Thanks
But do yo have any advice about the one of the 4 "fake DVD's" listed above that I should prefer for the test ?

I am not going to buy them all: 25+25+50+50 = 150 fakes !

WEll you can drop bulkpaq. Because the change these days that you get low quality with a legit mid is quite high.

So this media has to be real garbage ?

Hmm worst from these are the gigatain fake yuden disc's.

Thanks a lot RJW and dolphin ...
I think that I will probably get MCC codes for these Gigatain Made in Macau
instead of the former TY codes ?

Now I am looking for a precise protocole to run these tests
because of the many settings that are possible in this AS number 2:
- Auto Selection
- AS ON (forced)
- AS ON
- AS OFF

So finaly I got a a spindle of the 1st listed Gigatain DVD-R 8x.
On the side of the spindle you can read:
ODS Optical Disc Service GmBH
23942 Dassow, Germany
Made in Macau
The EAN code is: 4260069890820

The media code is: MCC 02RG20 like Verbatim DVD-R 8x
- The outer hub: DVD-R M-804
- The inner hub is very long, it is stamped all around the hub and I don't even know where it starts:
DVD-R 7C-180 405 U280 04 050 513 233514 197707

Here at nierle the Closeup2 picture says something similar:

I burned 3 of them @8x (highest possible speed) in a PX-760A with the latest firmware 1.05 in this sequence:
1°) AS OFF: so no entry created
2°) AS ON (Forced): an entry was create in the database
3°) AS Auto Selection

I did PI/PO scans on all of them: Sum8, Sum1 and Burst mode.
I got in the 3 cases very goog burns with no real difference between the 3 settings of AS !
The TA test gave me some: Excellent - Very good - Good
which I never had before with any media !!

So I am desperate and lost some faith in error scanning !!!
Or are these samples "super fakes" ??

I wounder what is going to happen when I will burn these "fakes" with other drives which have no AS:
NEC 3500, Optiarc AD-7173A, Pioneer 107D or LG 4163B ?

It could be that the stability and not the compatibility is the problem...

The newere Gigatain disc's with abused MCC code are much better when it comes to initial burn quality as the disc's who abused the TY code.

I think C't also showed that these can burn with decent error rates.

Thanks a lot for your advice !
A least i got some cheap medias with these DVD-R 8x Gigatain. I will see if their MCC dye ages well

So I am getting sceptic about which DVD's to test if even fakes burn well ...

If I had time I would try to look things up.
ALso not all fake stuff burns well but quite some decent fakes can burn ok on the right drive. However there is were we see the differences in drives.
While allmost any burner can burn real mCC02RG20 good. fakes are most time good supported on a few drives were the drives it will work nicely on will vary for each fake.
