Best media for the BenQ 1655?

I'll be using ImgBurn for the final process (the actual burning). Is there any way to tell what the BenQ 1655 is burning at with the 2.4X DL media when I set it to max burning speed?

You will be able to see the available speeds for that media in that particular drive before you start the burn with ImgBurn, and during the burn you will also see the actual burning speed.

Even unsupported speeds are available as choices in the Write Speed drop-down box in ImgBurn. Unlike some other burning programs, ImgBurn doesn't change the available speeds depending on what the drive supports with currently inserted media.

I was referring to the info window in ImgBurn which shows you such things as media code, capacity and also the available write speeds.

With the latest firmware, the supported write speeds in ImgBurn only shows 2.4X.

Oh well, no big deal as I also ordered the 8X discs from newegg. When I'm not in a hurry, I'll use the 2.4X and when I am it will be the 8X. The speed I burn on the 8X might still be 4X, but I'll worry about that when I get to it.

Almost forgot, there is no analog plug for the 1655, but a two-pin digital sound plug exists that has a D and a G as indicators on the top. What is this for and do I need it? I have something that looks like digital plugs, but I'm not sure if I can use it. It's two-pin female on both ends and has the following codes written on it:

i'm assuming you're talking about Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL media (MKM 001)? that IS the rated speed, but 4x or even 6x is ok. i believe the DW1650/55 doesn't overspeed DL media at all, so you're stuck with 2.4x. the 8x rated stuff (MKM 003) should burn at 8x.

What about the digital sound plug thingy (not included with retail burner)? Is this not necessary as with its analog counterpart these days?

It's the digital equivalent to the analog cables that are all but obsolete. Unless you have a sound card with a digital input for it, it's fairly useless. (and it's pretty useless anyway since now most/all drives can do "accurate enough" DAE to be able to play audio digitally without a special hookup-- the original point was to be able to play back CD audio digitally before drives/software/systems were capable of streaming back the audio over IDE) I'm surprised a new drive even has it anymore...
