Quality burning of DVD-RAM ?

LG and Matshita have been at it longest, but recently (last few months) other manufacturers have jumped on the DVD-RAM bandwageon.

is there any reason to think that say a LG drive would be better at burning DVD-RAM than newer companies such as NEC, Pioneer, Lite-On, BenQ ?

AFAIK there's hardly any info on DVD-RAM burn quality and it's not done in drive reviews either to the best of my recollection (though i admit i haven't searched extensively).

we don't even know if scanning with CDSpeed and the like means anything, do we ?

From what I know, Pioneer-drives seems to pretty well in DVD-RAM-burning. But I heard not the best things about NEC and Liteon. We should not forget that only a few companies manufacture DVD-RAM, so I don´t understand why some drives have probs with it.

I saw some DVD-RAM-scans at cdfreaks, it´s not what we call good when compare to scans from good DVD R media. but AFAIK there exist no official specs for the error-rates of DVD-RAM and Audiodev CATS don´t can scan it.

I've run some tests with a Lite-On SHM-165H6S (I think I posted some in the Writing Quality section of the forum) but as Wischmop said, its hard to tell what is considered good and bad.

Pretty much any opinion given on DVD-RAM burn quality will be based on media tests with unknown result qualifiers, and just plain guesses based on the rest of the drive's/media brand's performance.

OK then so how about real-wold experience? (does it exist)?
any actual experience of using DVD-RAM on LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, NEC, LiteOn, BenQ (did i miss anyone)?
any opinions on which is better at it ?

I had good experience with my LG GSA 4082, I used Panasonic and Verbatim-Media. Hope it will be readable this 30 years

But I had also bad experience, my DVD-Recorder JVC DR-M10 had worse results with some DVD-RAM-media, unreadable burns, especially with Primedisc-media (should be Ritek). My new DVD-HDD-Recoder from Pioneer also not doing well with RAM-media, i recorded some RAMs and sometimes I have "picture-errors" with artefacts, but no probs with newer DVD-RW-media

Does anybody know if the ScanDisc test in CD DVD Speed
is of any significance for a DVD-RAM formated in FAT32
and used like a HD by drag an drop in the Windows XP Explorer ?

Notice: after a "creating data disc" in CD Speed
a DVD-RAM comes out in an UDF format

Actually dodecahedron you did miss some, if you look at the brand logo.
Not sure about the results if we take manufacturers only.
But today you find support for DVD-RAM from most brands, and I could add to your list Sony, Plextor, HP, Asus, Samsung...maybe even more...

Panasonic and maxell media are reported as being of good quality.

About test - the way RAM writes to disc includes data verification, so in terms of quality if it passes this test may be enough to guaranty the recording.
The drivers from Panasonic offer extended functionality, but I assume native support by XP does the same (at least a kind of) and deals with the disc as if it were a HDD or a large floppy, and for those you don't consider this kind of tests even knowing you don't have the data verification phase, as offered by DVD-RAM.

My experiences are with a NEC 4551 and a Panasonic that uses cartridge discs, and I had no problems even with a 3x Primedisc I got just for test purposes.

Sony, Asus, HP rebadge drives made by others (Lite-On, LG, Panasonic...)
maybe i should've added Samsung.
do 'real' Plextor drives do DVD-RAM? i don't remember and can't be bothered to check.

anyway LG and Panasonic have been the longest at the DVD-RAM business. i wonder if that means they are better at it.

that is besides the point. it's still a legetimate question to ask how good the burn is.

If I read well at page 4, as DVD-RAM signals the bad spots and fixes to substitute ones, this kind of defects may be found by some test software but I wander if there is one that can also check and account for the corrections made during the burning process.
