Ritek and CMC Producing 18x DVD Media!?

Postby Ian on Mon Sep 18, 2006 10:36 am

This surprised me...

http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20060918A6040.html

Although several leading global brands have already launched or will soon offer 18x DVD burners, CMC Magnetics and Ritek, Taiwan's top two makers of optical discs, currently produce 18x DVD+R/-R discs only in limited volumes and the supply may fall significantly short of global demand, according to industry sources.

Plextor, Lite-On IT, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony, NEC and BenQ currently offer 18x DVD burners while Pioneer and Asustek Computer will do so soon. The sources indicated that 18x DVD burners may begin to replace 16x models to become the mainstream DVD burner next quarter, the sources indicated.

However, the global supply of 18x DVD+R/-R discs appear to be lagging, the sources pointed out. CMC and Ritek are able to immediately start volume production of 18x DVD+R/-R discs as long as the market demand is large enough, the two companies said.

Because of relatively high prices, 18x DVD+R/-R discs will not become popular until 2007, the industry sources noted.

dolph, have you heard anything about this or is DigiTimes pulling stuff out of their ass again?

I'll look into it!

It wouldn't surprise me overly... the fact is that media prices have fallen well below cost, and they need to have something "new" to drive prices back up again so they can make a little money. This recent swing to $0.20 name brand media is pretty insane if you ask me! :o

I´m not that much surprised. It´s for ppl that think when they have a 18x-writer they have to buy 18x-media

However, maybe u can burn this new media @16x with better quality than current 16x-media ;)

A question was raised to me regarding CMC and Ritek making 18x media.... how can they make 18x media when most 18x drives only support their 16x media at 12x or lower?
