Philips 8x DVD+RDL (CMCMAGD04)

General discussion about recordable CD, DVD and BD media and write quality testing.

Philips 8x DVD+RDL (CMCMAGD04)

Postby dolphinius_rex on Sat Sep 02, 2006 1:26 am

I picked up a 25pc spindle of these for $30 CAD today at Futureshop today, and so far they've failed during the burn process (before the layer break) on my BenQ DW1640 and BenQ DW1650, both of which officially have 8x support for this media (but burned it at 4x only!). I've almost completed a burn on one of the discs at 2.4x in my Pioneer DVR-111D running firmware 1.29 though.

So far, I'm VERY disappointed...

The Burn completed on my Pioneer DVR-111D at 2.4x. I'll post a scan later. It turns out my LiteON SHW-1635S has proper 8x support for CMCMAGD01, so now I'm trying to burn it on that. So far the disc is already burning at 6x, and may still make the jump to 8x :)

More info to come when I have it!

Alright!

I tried burning the media at 4x in the LiteON and it burned poorly still... so I tried enabling hypertuning and the disc that burned was not even readable to the layer break!

So currently burning these at 2.4x in the Pioneer DVR-111D seems to be the best option! :o

Here are some scan results of this media, from the drives that I could get to actually burn it (and some variations).

As you can see, not too impressive, but at least readable all the way through (when you don't enable hypertuning!)

Here's a burn done on the Pioneer DVR-111D at 2.4x (firmware 1.29).

I actually think the results on the Pioneer @ 2x are pretty damn good. Those are the kind of results I expect to see from MKM. I have no idea why the BenQs are failing before the layer break, considering the Pioneer can put out good results @ 2x, and the LiteON can produce ok results @ 8x.

Perhaps I'd go a little harder on this media if it was actually priced like 8x DVD+RDL media, but it's not, it's priced less than most 2.4x media!

(I will admit though, that Philips shouldn't have released this product so early, considering how bad the support is)

I've also had problems at the layer break with my 1640 with RITEKD01 discs. :( They burn okay in my NEC 3500 though.

I think it´s good that I very rarely use DL-media in my Benq 1640 :o

Pioneer do a fine job imho, but the old Plex 716 showas agin that Plextor is not bad for DL-media

However, very cheap media. Here in Germany the cheapest DL-media costs 2 €/piece
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

I tried the new BCIB firmware on my BenQ, but to no avail :(

But at least ONE person has been able to get their BenQ DW1655 to burn the media, at 8x even!! :o

I just tried a burn on my BenQ DW1620 for the heck of it, it failed before it even began! (session fixation error writing lead-in). I was using firmware B7W9 (the latest still I believe).

I've heard the Pioneer DVR-110 can burn these about as well as the Pioneer DVR-111D and at the same speed (2.4x).

Oh, I heard often that Benq-writers are not the best for DL, seems to be right.

I bought my Bestmedia because sometimes I amy need a DL-media, maybe I buy second writer

Begining to think you used the wrong benq burner.
After seeing some very good results from a benq 1640

For example.

Maybe it's time to try with a 1640 if you haven't ??
