Samsung SH-S182D Quickie Preview

Samsung's new 18x DVD writer showed up today. While I'm at work and can't do any write quality testing, I figured I'd post a few screenshots.

I had some 16x Verbatim media at work. Luckily it worked at 18x.





The SH-S182D is a few seconds slower than the Plextor PX-760A. At least with Verbatim media and CD Speed.

I wasn't able to change the booktype via CD Speed. However, it automatically changed the booktype to DVD-ROM for DVD+R media. [Edit: CD Speed seems to change it. The status just doesn't show up right on my computer].

If I have time, I'll post some writing quality scans tonite. Maybe even some 12x DVD-RAM tests.

If LG used a more aggressive WOPC strategy like the other drives do, it wouldn't beat them. The lack of such a strategy can produce some ugly results on some of the non-Japanese media (or on slightly lower quality batches of Jpn discs).

I saw many scans in which LG kicked others ass on non TY/MCC-media and without the WOPC

Why use anything but TY/MCC?

Cheap media = crappy results. If you expect otherwise...you're in for a nasty surprise.

The real surprise, though, is when the cheap stuff does produced good results.

Not that I'd expect any cheapy media to actually last very long...good results or not.

I need to retest the MCC 004 as I'm not too happy with those results. However, the results with MCC 03RG20 were surprisingly good.

I suspect the 18X burn speed is much more detrimental to quality than the lack of an aggressive WOPC strategy, especially with quality media. And quality media is the only media that can really handle the 18X burn speed to begin with!

Seriously though, I don't really care who comes out with a drive review for any model first. I suppose its good for bragging rights, but if both review a certain drive, I read both reviews. I've often found one review misses something another picks up on.

There aren't that many sites that do decent detailed drive reviews which stay up to date with recent models. Both sites are actually pretty much operating a closed shop. I read reviews from both sites as a clueless newbie trying to buy a DVD writer and I still refer people asking me about what drives to buy to the reviews of both sites.

You may want to consider increasing the displayed maximum speed option to 18x or even 20x so the burn curve does not get truncated. See this illustration (17x as highlighted),

Yeah, I noticed that. The odd thing is, I always have it set to 18x by default.

Ah, version 4.5x did introduce quite a few niggling bugs, must be yet another one.

On hindsight, I see that you had actually set yours to 20x from the 2nd post in this thread.
