A "nice" surprise in a Verbatium DVD+R spindle...

I could understand at the top of the spindle, but the middle?

Oh well...one out of 2x10^2912 discs ain't bad :wink:

Ever happen to anyone else?

I've never seen anything that bad.... not with Verbatim at least. It's pretty rare to see something that bad from ANY manufacturer :o

Can you tell us what the serial number code is on that disc? Not the MID code, but the printed serial number in both the plastic hub of the disc, and the mirror band of the disc.

I think I got these late last year at Best Buy (I tend to stock up when they're on sale)...

Looks like that was made by CMC... which kind of surprises me, since I would have expected that to be more of a Prodisc kind of problem. I've sent a note to Verbatim regarding this thread on your behalf.

Is it just the one disc affected?

Yeah, looks like it.

Urg...CMC...Man, it's getting to the point I don't know what media to burn my important stuff too anymore (best bet: multiple discs!).

Maxell Plus Series, Verbatim, and Taiyo Yuden. Pick 2, or use all 3 and you should be pretty safe.

I have a pretty good supply of Verbatiums right now...the quality seems to vary quite a bit (alot of the batchs I have produce a PIE spike at the same spot, same PIE count, near the begininng of the disc, no matter what burner or burn speed I use. Shows up on scans from the NEC, two BenQs, and my Plex :evil: ). Verbatiums though produced one of the best quality scans I've ever seen (and no longer have saved :evil: ), PIE average 2.29, PIF *total* 9.

The Imation "Scratch Resistant" media seems to be pretty good:

How is MBI overall?

I haven't seen the Maxell Plus media before...is it the same as the "Pro" media? Which just seems to be TY...

Moser Baer is like CMC, in that they product a large amount of different grade products. Much more then just A or B grade from what I've been told. HOWEVER, they do seem to be able to internally grade it fairly effectively, so important brand names will probably get mostly good stuff (unless they ask otherwise), but no name Moser Baer might be less impressive.

Maxell Plus Series is a North American product only. It's basically Maxell's OWN Japanese made DVD-Rs. None of it is Taiyo Yuden.

I've had a few Maxells that said "made in japan" and had Maxell media codes. If I remember correctly, it was very consistent (about the same error levels no matter what drive I burned it in). It wasn't the "pro" media, just a normal 25-pack...

Well, like I said, it's only a North American thing, I have no idea how things are in other parts of the world. Maxell's product is pretty different in Japan or Europe then Canada or the US.

I miss Verbatim AZO blue discs....they seem to be a lot harder to find now, but I had great results with those CD-R's.

They're still readily available, you just need to know where to look, or who to ask. I could get them any time I want here in Canada :wink:

Sort of related, I opened a new spindle of Optodisc injet printable 16x DVD+R media. All of the discs have spots on them. At first I thought it was crud from the printable layer but they won't wipe off.

You may also want to someone in QA, someone's fingertip got stuck in that disc, and the spindle got sent out like that!!
