Personally, I use either DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink. Some of the newer copy protections will require a program like AnyDVD (http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html).

1. Use DVD Decryptor in ISO mode.

2. Use DVD Shrink in ISO mode to shrink (remove as many menus, extras, extra audio languages, etc.) - I like to keep only the movie.

3. Use DVD Decryptor or IMG Burn to burn the ISO file to DVD.

This method has NEVER failed me. (I probably don't back up as much as some of the others around here though.)

Good Luck.

Good luck.

On some newer DVD's they add Sony ARCCOS copy-protection,in that case use DVDFab Decrypter:

your step 1 is totally useless, shrink is doing that step already

i have dvd region free running while shrink is decrypting, then shrink is set to burn straight to dvd decrypter

completely hands off after you hit the GO button in shrink, all the way to final burn in dvd decrypter

I had trouble with Shrink decrypting DVDs. Is "DVD Region Free" free software? I tried DVD43 and it had errors too. My method works for me everytime.

No it's not a useless step, if you want an uncompressed DVD folder on your HDD, this is a good way to go. While DVDD is no longer supported, it will decrypt a lot of DVD's that Shrink alone can't.

just wondering... why would you want an uncompressed dvd on your hard drive?

what dvds can't shrink decrypt? if its new protection thats why you run anydvd or dvd region free in the background

The Dukes of Hazzard is one that pops to mind immediately, Shrink wouldn't touch it, DVDD no problem. Actually there are many that Shrink can't muster due to it's inactivity of about 3 years, DVDD has not been updated for a little over a year. Shrink is a great program though, as you know, it's only fault is it's outdated ripper, which as you've said will work fine with AnyDVD, DVD43 etc.

As far as putting the movie on your HDD, it's useful if you use different programs. I use CloneDVD2, DVDFabGold, DVDShrink, & DVDRemakePro on a very regular basis, if you have it on your HDD, you'll not only save time, but it is also easier/faster to edit content from the HDD than the disc. I'll often make a movie only backup, and also a 2 disc split with no compression of the same movie. On another note, Shrink does not do a good job of handling dual layer burns(ie layer break placement), where an ISO read from DVDD and then burn it with ImgBurn is arguably the most fool-proof method out there.
