If it said 8x DL on the box they were usually BenQ DW1640's. Of course that was a few months ago.

The drive is not LS drive and most likely is BTC. You can see the ad and the drive right here:

Edit: Looking at large image of the drive may be Ian is right and the drive is BenQ 1640.

Could also possibly be a 1650 by now or as mentioned the dreaded BTC or even a LiteOn I spose. They were using quite a few diferent drives in the later 8x DL lightscribe boxes but most were 1655's, mine was.
Either tweak the box enough to try and see whats in it or just ask them to open it to verify you get a drive you like.

You owe me  . I'm just getting home from Staples after picking up some software.

I was looking for a 1640 but it looks like we all guessed wrong, at least for the one box that I opened. What do you guys think of the DW1670?

Thanks, saw the deal on several sites at the time, here, freaks, Slick Deals...
The 1670 is based on a Panasonic chipset and so far I believe can't do quality scans or supports Solid Burn so it's not really like any BenQ we're used too.
I do beleive becuase of the new chip it now supports dvd RAM at 5x I think the Sony 820? is the same drive and Freaks has a review or at least a preview up on it pretty sure.

CD Freaks must have gotten a magic drive because I've had two test units here and have not gotten them to work nearly as the one they used in their review. CPU usage is all over the place, drive won't read/write DL media at the right speeds.. With BenQ getting overhauled, it doesn't look like we'll be getting a firmware fix any time soon either.

Let me put it this way.. if you don't need DVD-RAM support, you're MUCH better off with the DW1655/1650.. or even a DW1640.

I agree. Just trying to be nuetral about it but the panny chips aren't near as good as the Nexperia Phillips chips. We're hoping LiteOn doesn't just gut BenQ and destroy the great drives they made.
I use my NEC 4551 or Pioneer 111 for RAM work.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the information and tips.

I'm gonna pass on the I/O Magic/BenQ1670 for now. Along with it having a Panasonic chipset Ian makes a good point that firmware support may be slooow.

There is a link in the slickdeals site for $5.00 off of Staples DVD media coupon. That brought the price of the Staples 8x DVD +/- R media down to $3.00 for a spindle of 50. I purchased one of the DVD-R, and they are CMC MAG.AE1 media that will burn at 12x in my 110D burner. The coupon is good until May 31st, but I suspect this was an error of some sort that may not be honored tomorrow.
