Problems with TY media

Hi there,

I have been using TYG03 media purchased from supermediastore, on a DW1640 (BSOB) drive for a while now. I've noticed that the last couple birthday cakes of media have had more coasters show up during nero 6's verification routine than before. I'm not sure if this is just indicitave of a single bad batch of media, or general "badness" in the 16x media. I thought that I would mention it though.

The media is the silver lauquer type, (non printable) - the media code is:

Are these value line, or premium line?

Ok, those are premium. Value line is the media sold as tapewrapped 4X. I think Dolph will have something to say about this..

hmm... since this seems to be a 'thing' - i've grabbed the two coasters from this afternoon out of the wastebasket, in case dolph is interested in having them for further --- analysis.

I'm not surprised unfortunately. I have had pretty bad results from Taiyo Yuden's 16x media. The only GOOD results I've seen on it are with BenQ drives using Soldiburn. I've gotten "ok" results out of Pioneer and Plextor drives, but the variable quality of TYG03 in general tends to make it hard to predict. YUDEN000T03 seems to be even worse.

I'm not sure if YUDEN000T03's problem is caused by lack of support from drive manufacturers, or flaws in the media itself. TYG03's problems seem to be more on the physical flaws end of things, and less on the drive support though.

so should I give up on TYG03 and go back to the 8X?

i've used qsuite and turned solidburn "on" for known media types, but I read somewhere that it takes a few burns before the drive develops a better write strategy?

Personally I recommend going back to the 8x DVD-Rs. They offer much more consistant results. But using SolidBurn you SHOULD get better results with TYG03 then you have been getting, probably even on the first burn or two.
