New Kodak Preservation CD-R DVD-R media

Hi guys,

Has anyone picked up any of this media yet?

I'm transferring an audio cassette to CD for a colleague. The tape is a master that his uncle cut at Columbia in the 50's or 60's; we're doing this so that we can preserve the music and with it, his family's heritage. I'd like to use discs that aren't prone to degradation over time.

Of course, I don't need a 100-pack spindle, so if anyone knows where I can find these in small quantities (say, 5-25 pack) I'd appreciate knowing that too.

Where can one get these at all?
BenQ 1655, BenQ 1620, LG 4167, Plex PX-716SA, Samsung SH-S162L, SH-S182M, Pioneer 111D, Lite-On SHM-165H6S and 1.9TB of HDDs to feed 'em and an X2/4800 to crunch for 'em.

Wow.

For the price, buy 5 100-pack spindles of 5 different brands, burn copies on each of the 500 discs you bought, and store them well.

I'm sure at least 1 copy will last as long as the Kodak. ;)

Mitsui discs as well I think :wink:

What about MPO? They had also Gold-Discs in the past

Yup, they make Emtec's Gold CD-R and DVD-Rs.

Given that they're still distributed by KMP media, the company Kodak pawned their name off to, they're probably B or worse grade gold media!

Nope, I talked with MAM-A yesterday, and they told me it's all the same grade as MAM-A's own brand of media.... although the MID code may be different, and therefore the results can vary. As Ian's previous tests show, the TDK MID may not work very well with the Gold media's attributes.

Any idea where I can get, say a 5-10pack of these CD-Rs? Rarely do I need something as high-quality as this, but I could use a few now, and 100 at that price is way too rich for my blood.

Well, you could always order from MAM-A's online shop, then you can get 25pks of Gold CD-Rs and 10pks of Gold DVD-Rs:

And I recommend getting the 4x Gold DVD-Rs and NOT the Gold 8x DVD-Rs. This is based on Ian's poor results with 8x rated Gold media from Memorex (which MAM-A Claims is the same grade as their own brand).

Shoot! Doesn't look like they make 80min. CD-R's, they only list the 74min discs. It'll be cutting it close on this project I'm doing, I'll either have to find other discs or make a test disc off my regular media first to see if it will fit.

Regular Gold CD-Rs also come in 80min, but not the Archival Gold CD-Rs.

Only for america. MAM-E is supposed to have the kodak brand name for europe.

I found a vendor on Amazon who carried a ten-pack of the MAM-A discs for $17.00 + shipping.

The shipping was lousy, but I really don't need that many, probably 2-3 for what I'm doing. The music was created by my colleague's family and is part of his heritage, so I want him to have some forever copies. I found out that all 24 tracks on the tape only take about 60 minutes, so the archive-grade CD's will work.

It's too bad I'm not better at cleaning things up; I did the best I could, but my talents in reducing hiss/noise/etc. are limited, even with the proper software. At least with a digital copy, it won't degrade any further.

Those are Gold COLOUR Topped Vinyl CD-Rs only.... no actual gold in them.

Yeah, but will the dye be as good as the older Super Azo discs? These are the only Verb CD-Rs available here, unfortunately.
