Verbatim LightScribe 1.2 DVD+R Media Available At Best Buy

I stopped at Best Buy tonight to pick up some 8x DVD+R DL media for dolph. Sitting next to it on the shelf was Verbatim's new LightScribe 1.2 DVD+R media. These discs are supposed to be 1.8x (or is that 1.6x?) faster than standard LightScribe media.

Oh yeah, they wanted $39.99 for a pack of 30.. same price as the old discs.

Notice how he neglects to mention whether he picked some of THOSE up for "Dolph" too.... :cry:

I didn't buy them for myself either. If they would have had their new LightScribe 1.2 CD-R discs in stock, I would have picked some up for both of us.

Do these need a firmware update to work at the higher speeds? I've got a BenQ 1655 and find LS very useful for labeling backups discs. Slow, yeah, but I don't have (or need or want) a printer and only print (burn?) a few labels.

Edit: Any where online to order those?
BenQ 1655, BenQ 1620, LG 4167, Plex PX-716SA, Samsung SH-S162L, SH-S182M, Pioneer 111D, Lite-On SHM-165H6S and 1.9TB of HDDs to feed 'em and an X2/4800 to crunch for 'em.

Oh yes, will have to go see if available here but why I see nothing about that on the lisghtscribe.com website? Does current firmware recognize these new discs by reading the LS ID and will be faster or we need a new firmware?

You should not need a firmware update. However, you will probably have to update your LS drivers so that the media is recognized correctly.

I saw Memorex 8x DVD+Rs today, that had the sticker showing Lightscribe 1.2 as well. It claimed that they were compatible for faster labelling on all lightscribe drives, but no mention of needing to upgrade the lightscribe drivers... :-?

BTW, 1.2 is only about speed, right? No better contrast on the 1st pass with that newer dye layer?

I am waiting for some "Labelflash" disc to show -up in the stores if any. Having NEC 4551 being idle for while I wonder if we would see Labeflash disc here soon?.

I read in the past that 1.2 was introducing differenr background colors. This spindle doesn't confirm it :roll:

For better contrast, lol, look the new utility on Lightscribe.com ... A shame.

Personally, I'm hoping it'll be discontinued before it's brought over to North America, but that's just me :wink:

The market demand is VERY small for this technology, and right now the companies involved are having a hard time recouping R&D money as it is. Competition will only serve to kill both labelling formats. But luckily, Labelflash has barely touched Lightscribe's market as of yet.

Pff... these formats mean nothing to me. It adds about $20 to cost of the drive, and the media is at least 2X more expensive than regular media. If I wanted fancy labelling, I'd use inkjet printables which produce faster, better looking results for less.

Although, I guess for Joe Average who just wants to label a few discs, $80 for a printer in a bit much.

Isn't LabelFlash already dead ?

Sad to see OEM NEC buyers without Nero CD not able to do LabelFlash during months because of a missing dll :roll:

Pretty much yeah... it's not QUITE as dead as DVD-R for Authoring, but it's more dead the DVD-RDL.

You don't need a missing dll file to enable the "Labelfalsh" Nero 7.0.8.2 already has this function support build into it

I for one am VERY skeptical about Nero 7 in general. I'm still using Nero 6 for all my own stuff, and keep Nero 7 confined to my "play" PC for occasional testing to see if it's started working properly yet. Seriously, it's coastered almost every Audio CDR and Video DVDR its' burned! :o
