NEC Demonstrates HD-DVD Burning At CeBIT

NEC is demonstrating a new HD DVD writer at CeBIT called the HD-1100.

NEC is demonstrating its HD-DVD drive with media from Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, which is best known by its Verbatim brand name. The company is shooting high-definition video each morning at the show and burning it onto a disc for playback during the day, said Ryoichi Hayatsu, an NEC storage product division manager, in an interview.

The blank media, which became available only days before CeBIT began, is single-sided. NEC's drive, the HD-1100, is also compatible with dual-layer discs, which can store 30GB. In addition, the drive can write to DVD and CD media.

NEC is also working on support for rewritable HD-DVD media, although the HD-DVD Rewritable specification has yet to be completed. That's expected to be finalized in May or June this year, said Hayatsu.

Is it just me or is HD DVD really lagging behind Blu-ray when it comes to recordable technology?

It seems the hardware is cheaper and faster in being released, but BluRay seems to have their media ready, from a couple suppliers now (Sony, TDK, and Verbatim is just about ready, or perhaps ready now). On top of that, BluRay has their re-writable media already finished. Both camps seem to be lagging behind in dual layer technology however... but since a dual layer HDDVDR is only a little bigger then a single layer BD-R, I don't mind if things take a little longer

Deffinately! When you're spending *THAT* much for record once media, you want to make *SURE* you've got the bugs worked out before you commit!

Speaking as someone with knowledge of DVD mastering... RW media can play a HUGE role.

And don't forget, the main market for BluRay and HDDVD is going to be corporate and Movie distribution until the prices come down significantly.

DVDRWs are highly used in some areas, and a lot of new users prefer to start with RW media.

Does anyone else think that the HDDVD logo looks really lame as the only thing on that drive?

Yeah, they're molded into the tray. I have a feeling this is just the bezel from one of their DVD writers and someone painted that HD DVD logo on it.
