Error 0x80072F89

Postby NuGuy on Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:27 am

This is the code I get when trying to update my Win98SE at Microsoft's update site. It scans my existing system OK, then starts to scan for updates. About 2 seconds later I get an error message, and this code is given. This is not in MS's Knowledge Base, and I found nothing useful via Google.

Occasionally (I've tried several times) I get this code: 0x80072F05, but usually it's the "-89" that I get. Does anyone have a clue what's going on? (I checked the sartup activity log [? - at Windows/Windows Log...], and this is the true code.) Thanks.

I'm not sure about Win98SE, but with XP there's a WindowsUpdate.log file in the Windows directory. This should give you more info on what's happening.

Yes, that is the log I was (trying to) referring to. I'm at work right now, and I guess I should have written down the entire log event line. All log entries/actions were successful except this single event, when the scan for updates actually begins.

I have tried several fixes, including a patch from MS.

Apparently there are two essential Certificates required, and I have them both -- something like "MS Root Authority" and a "No Liability" from someone else (something like Verifax..?) --- this one is expired, but the MS reference I have says that it should still work anyway. I'm not sure if this situation is related at all to my current problem.

I guess it's time for a new computer. I'm reluctant to buy one without knowing exactly what MS's forthcoming OS will require to run well. I've heard that Dell will be implementing some new hardware features this fall, probably intentionally in sync with the availability of the new OS.

Hey, Ian -

Thanks for the replies.

Last night, on my way home from work, I stopped off to look at some computers. I knew in my heart I couldn't postpone buying one any longer, and took one home.
