Verbatim 8x Media Quality

Postby VideoRoy on Wed Mar 01, 2006 10:48 am

I would like to get the help of some of the media experts here.

I think I got my first batch ever of "bad" Verbatim 8x. I did a quick test to show the differences with the only difference in the test being which spindle I pulled the media from. I did check the number on the inner ring and they are different between these 2 discs. All the "bad" discs on the one spindle have the same number.

How test was performed:
1. Verbatim 8x media from 2 different spindles
2. DRU-710A PC burner (scans looks about the same in my PX-716A)
3. Same exact data burned in UDF format in Nero 7.0.5.4
4. Scanned in DRU-710A @ 4x with CDSpeed 4.11

I may be spoiled since I am used to such good scans but I was not happy with the "bad" spindle of discs. They pretty much all looked like the BAD image so I returned the spindle. I have since found another spindle with the same lot code and same results.

Am I being too critical or picky? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Well... I would say the second disc is probably one to keep an eye on, and I wouldn't expect it to last as long as the first.

Any chance you could post the serial numbers for both discs? I'm willing to bet one is made by CMC and the other by Prodisc.

Here is the "bad" one ZD3093-DVR-147A but I will not be able to get a "good" number until tonight. I returned all the "bad" spindles and picked up some 100pks from the same boxes that I found the good ones.

This particular project I am working I am very concerned about how long the disc will last. I am archiving raw .AVI files that are used in producing DVD movies. I also want my DVD movies to last though.

I am just not sure how bad it is.

Thanks for your help.

From memory though I can tell you the "good" number was something like this ZD41xx-DVR-147C

xx being the digits I do not remember. How can you tell which manufactuer from these?

Dolph meant for you to post the serials posted in the clear hub area, not the stamper serials etched into the dye area. The hub serial can be used to determine who manufactured the disc as every disc manufacturer uses a different numbering system.

I will look again this evening but those were the only numbers I saw. On the clear inner area it just said Verbatim 8x ... but I did not see numbers.

I have never paid much attention to those numbers so I could be mistaken. Thanks for the info.

Are the stamper numbers an indication of a batch or lot?

Every spindle I have are Made in Taiwan, including the ones I returned.

Ok I rechecked my feeble eyes and now find the numbers plain as day. Not sure why I did not see them the first time.

On the scans I posted here:

"BAD" = 4364E1413-06876013
"GOOD" = 5109E2123-00088018

I returned 4 - 50pk spindles that had the ZD3093-DVR-147A (BAD number above) stamper number before I found out that was not the code to look for. However I believe that number means they call came from the same lot or plant so I am still glad I returned them.

I have 2 - 50pk that have the GOOD number above on them.

I also purchased some new 100pks that have 5109E22124-00087C18 and the first one burned similar to the GOOD (I see a pattern here)

One of my old 100pks had MAHA061J09115191 2 and all 100 burned with scans similar to the GOOD (change in the pattern).

I am assuming the first 4 characters or so equal the manufacturer? If so it looks like I have 3 different with and I believe 2 out of 3 are good.

Still would like to know if I am just too critical. Any help is appreciated.

One correction. The 2 - 50pks I have left begin with 5193E not 5109E like the 100pks. Still look similar though.

All of those discs were made by Prodisc. It isn't necessarily so that the ones with the same stamper serial will have similar quality; I've used Verbatim 8x DVD+R with the code ZD1331-DVR-X47B from both the Prodisc factory and the CMC factory with quality varying with each spindle or package.

Those were made by CMC Magnetics. There isn't really any pattern to what you've experienced; you just got a bad batch of Prodisc-made MCC02RG20.

Thanks! Is there a database somewhere that has the codes in them. I thought they were all MCC (Mitsubshi Chemical). I have generally be very happy with the Verbatim 8x -Rs. When Sam's had the sale on 50pks I bought 6 of them. 4 from one store and 2 from another. The 4 are the ones I returned.

Just recently Sam's had a few more of the 100pks show up so I went back a picked up a few of them. I just want to get some reliable media that I can use for the project I am on.

I also have purchased a number of TDK 16x TTH02 which are just OK in my PC drives but my DVD Video Recorder seems to really like them and they burn well.

Everything I have purchased (Verbatim or TDK) has been 29 cents or cheaper. I know I can do a little on the internet but it is nice to be able to pop into the store an walk out with some discs.

I appreciate the help.

They are all MCC discs. However, Mitsubishi Chemical does very little disc manufacturing at its own plant in Singapore; it outsources the production of most of its discs to Prodisc and CMC in Taiwan, and Moser Baer in India. MCC supplies the dye and stampers to these companies and oversees the production of the discs bearing its media codes.

Thans for the info. I still feel good about the returns because I physically picked them from the same box. But what I am hearing is that you never quite know what you are going to get (sounds like Forrest Gump  ) so I will continue to check.

Too bad you cannot figure it out from the packaging alone.

A little off topic from the 8x but I bought one spindle of Verbatim 16x -R and have not been impressed with them in any of my burners. I really do not need the speed but they were on sale so I thought I would give them a try.

Thanks again.
