I-O DATA DVR-ABM16G (Panasonic SW-9587) - 12x DVD-RAM Write

Yep, I-O DATA has another Super-Multi drive with 12x DVD-RAM writing speeds. According to AV Watch, its based on the Matsushita (Panasonic) SW-9587.

While not groundbreaking, the specs are at least on par with the drives from the competition.

Well, all I have to say is that it's hard to find Verbatim 5X media at an affordable price even now...

I don't think I've ever seen Verbatim 5x media... only Maxell around here and that is next to impossible to get.

I must be behind the times, but what is the "+" next to the CD logo representing? I've seen it on a few other newer drive faceplates as well.

On topic: I sure hope Panasonic gets their act together with optical drives. I have an old USB external DVD-RAM of theirs and it's great (relatively) but slow. good burner, etc. They know how to do it right. The 9585 was a massive disappointment (I expected a good burner all-around and great burner on good Japanese media). Maybe the 9587 fixes some of the problems... and maybe they actually do some firmware upgrades to fix problems!

Ultra Speed CD-RW -> 16x-24x
Ultra Speed+ CD-RW -> 16x-32x

Only according to the official format specifications
Many HSCD-RWs can be burned at 12x
