Which is the most reliable DVD-RAM burner for DATA ?

I a looking for a burner in order to save Data files by Drag and Drop through the XP Explorer [DVD-RAM formated in FAT32]
And I wonder which is actually the most reliable burner for this particular purpose.
I think among these ones:
Nec 4550
Pioneer 110
Plextor PX-750 (or Teac or BenQ)
Liteon

I ask this because there is no such thing as burning quality scans for DVD-RAM's

Which means that most of us have as good an idea as you do.... :cry:
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

But you people at CDRLabs have far more experience
about reliability of DVD burners than I have ...

the Plextor PX-750 is a rebadge of what ? the BenQ DQ-60 ?

Well... I'd *like* to help.... but I can't shake the feeling that I don't know anything good or bad about any DVD-RAM burning aspects about any of the drives.

If I was going to make any call on DVD-RAM burning at all, I'd say go with LG since they've been pushing DVD-RAM for a LONG time now, and should have gotten it down pat by now... but LG isn't on your list.

Yep, I bought an LG 4167 for that reason. I was going to go Pioneer, but since they apparently won't bring the A10XL out over here (and I was leary about doing a cross-flash, since DVD-RAM was the big reason I wanted one and if there was a reason some were having DVD-RAM disabled I didn't want a poor burner!) I didn't want to risk it.

Plus, the 110/A10 family being their first DVD-RAM burner made me a little concerned.

If DVD-RAM was the most important thing, I'd say Panasonic or LG. Keep in mind, the latest Panasonic burners (like the 9585) suck for anything but DVD-RAM, and the LG 4163/4167 are excellent all around burners...

I did not put LG on my list because I own already a LG 4163B and I am quite happy with it.
So you advice me a LG 4167B for my new computer ?
If not I am thinking to get a NEC 4550 because of the overall (official and non official) firmware support

OK another question then:

what is the difference between using such a drive, an LG say, with Nero InCD/Sonic DLA vs. using DVD-RAM drivers?
in terms of performance? quality? etc...
can any of this be acutally tested?

note:DVD-RAM drivers not bundled with the LG drives since the GSA-4120B or something. but they can be found on the net, and if i'm not mistaken they support some of the newer drives at least.
anyone know why LG stopped supplying these drivers and started using InCD instead ?

What I know about this:

1°) Drag and drop files through the Explorer in FAT32 is native in XP so there is no real need for a driver

2°) The numerous UDF formats for DVD-RAM are not native in XP but they are in InCD

3°) Burning a DVD-RAM with Nero is possible in both:
- DVD video format (movie only play in some standalones such as the Panasonic DVD-S49)
- ISO or UDF/ISO format for data

But I only use Nero to burn an entire DVD-RAM of 3 or 4 GB: for example a Ghost.
My everyday usage of DVD-RAM is to save date files with the method 1°)
"in the background" by drag and drop (like on a HD)

About 16x DVD-RAM:
the specifications have been approved by the forum

But I am not waiting for these 16x DVD-RAM because:
- I am not sure that drag and drop in the background of smal files (10 to 100 MB)
will be a lot faster with 16x DVD-RAM's
- there is a incompatibilty announced: 3x or 5x DVD-RAM discs already written cannot be read in a 16x DVD-RAM burner

If I remember right, the new drives are backwards compatible with 3x and 5x discs. It's just that the new 16x discs don't work in older drives.

Can't be any worse then DVD-RDL media :roll:
