What is the best DVD-RW with Lightscribe? I only know of 5 with lightscribe capability.

Only BenQ and LG actually MAKE the drives listed above.... I'd say probably the LG 4166B at this point... but the new BenQ DW1655 may change my opinion in the next month or two :wink:

You know, Lite-On has a ridiculous number of drives available right now. Out of the last five announced, the SHW-1635S is the only one available in the US.

Do you know if that has something to do with the MediaTek embargo? (what's the current status on that anyway?)

Of the newer drives, the 16H5S is readily available in Germany and the 165P6S is starting to show up.

The drive pictured at CD Freaks is the OEM version of the DW1655. The retail version has the nice bezel.

It looks like the DW1655 will be shipping at the end of the month. Shop4Tech has preorders up already.

Hey guys,

Do we have an agreement on what's the best lightscribe DVD burner out?

Also, I wanted to clarify something. I was definately looking for one that can burn Dual Layer discs at high speed. I use the Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL discs and my Sony burner can burn then at 4x. Can any Lightscribe drive overburn?

So I guess what I'm asking is what is the best drive that can burn a fast, high quality lighscribe disc, while supporting fast Dual Layer overburn? From the looks of things, it seems the Benq 1655 is the way to go.

The BenQ DW1655 is probably the lightscribe drive with the overall highest tech. specs.... but I am not overly keen on recommending a drive that has still not been tested much.

One thing I should point out is that overburning DVDs has never worked properly... and over burning dual layer media is asking for even more trouble. I doubt any drive can do it.

Actually, I got one of the first drives that could burn a 2.4x DL disc at 4x (not a lightscribe drive) and it has NEVER given me problems. I've only burnt about 25 - 30 discs(mostly data backups, some movies), but that's still a pretty good amount for 0% failure.

I'll wait for you guys to post your reviews of the new Benq drive, but it sounds like the best drive out.

Hold on a second, I think I'm confusing my terminology. I'm simply talking about burning a 2.4x DL DVD at 4x or 6x.

Isn't overburing where, for example, you'd try to burn 720MB on a 700MB CD?

Sorry for the mistake. Is there a word used to describe buring a CD or DVD at speeds faster then they are rated for?

Pretty much every drive can overspeed Verbatim 2.4x DVD+RDL to 4x or faster. One or two drives can overspeed Ricoh or Ritek code DVD+RDL media... but it's usually a bad idea.

retail BenQ 1655 has BCAB fw and this fw scans pie pif but oem fw does not
